Subject: Heater Blower Motor? IP: Logged
Message: I have a dakota 3.9 1990/91?
My heat stopped working last winter. I can feel heat coming out slitely from the vends but turing up the fan does nothing ... my a/c went out a long time ago and did not need to spen $400 on that comfort , but heat is another story , I live in Michigan. I checked the fuse under hood and it seems to be good , though murrays did not have an exact match.
I am wondering if it is the blower motor? If so how much is it going to cost to fix?
Can a layperson who can change brakes and oil able to replace this ?
or hopefully is it possible its just a belt?

Message: by saying "turing up the fan does nothing" I am assuming you mean that the blower motor does not come on.
There are 2 possible causes that I can think of.
resister pack which I think on that model it's on the firewall. This is what controls the fan speed.
Or the blower moter is bad too.
Yes, it's possible to do yourself. Haynes has instructions but it's fairly simple ,just complex.
very brief overview:
evac a/c.
Drain coolant.
disconnect a/c lines (quick disconnect tool)
disconnect coolant lines.
disconnect vacuum hose (for HVAC controls).
remove dash / ashtray / glovebox.
disconnect bolts holding case to firewall.
disconnect electrical.
disconnect vaccuum hose from actuators (drivers and passenger side).
pull out case, pull out away from firewall, tilt down, remove. Inside the case in heater core and evap core. Attached to case is the blower motor.
I changed my a/c evap core a few months ago, took a couple hours for entire job.
someone posted a user/password for some online manuals, should be instructions there.

Message: If it's not the blower motor, back flush your heater core--I got instructions from this site(Search 'No Heat'). I am not mechanically inclined and had the whole process done within 20 minutes. Heat works great now.

Message: i had no blower motor a month ago but after taking it all apart and finding out that it wasnt the blower motor but the resister pack on the firewall. i just had to take that off and take a wire brush to the ends, just to clean it up. and POFF i had a blower motor and heat again.

Message: I have a 93 ext cab. Last winter my blower stopped working. I work for O'Reilly Auto parts and I picked up a new blower motor thinking that was it. Looked through the manual and saw that it would be a task to change, I was not looking forward to this task as I have never done it before. A fellow employee disagreed that it was the blower, since I asked him to help me replace it. My wife searched Yahoo! for the problem and took her here. Heater resistor on the passenger side firewall under the hood. I called our warehouse for the part and they told me DEALER ITEM ONLY!. Well of course, usually is with Dodge. So I called our local dealer, which I take parts to frequently, "Yes we sell it and no we do not have one." Would take a week to get it. Called a dealer twenty minutes away. Hade it next day. $13.00 fix. Better than $50.00 for blower motor. So i recommend checking it first. Just gotta know where it is located.

Message: I had the blower motor resistor problem too, during the summer when I really wanted the AC to work! I pulled it, and with very little effort I was able to reconnect the burned out end of the resistor wire to another terminal, solder it, and since then no problems. 15 minutes and a soldering iron is all it takes.
