Subject: '99 V6: Clicks when attempting to start. IP: Logged
Message: Background: '99 V6 Club Cab 2WD 135k miles
Problem 1: When attempting to start, turning the key sometimes gets 'clicks' only instead of the engine turning over. Eventually she'll start, but it could be after 1-2 turns-of-the-key or 10-20 turns-of-the-key. This problem has gone from intermittent to consistent in the past few months.
Problem 2: Also, when she does start, she often puffs a cloud of white smoke out of the exhaust. I thought I recalled this happening for a little while many months back then stopping before it started again, but I could be mistaken.
Could Problem 1 be due to starter contacts and Problem 2 be due to an aging head gasket? Thoughts, comments, suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

Message: on the starting problem, first, remove the battery cables from the battery and thoroughly clean the battery terminals and the connectors. After reattaching, if you still have the problem, then you likely need a new starter because the solonoid is bad. I'm gonna beg off on the white smoke - although white smoke is either water vapor, antifreeze, or trans fluid (on older cars with a vacuum modulator on the trans) are you losing coolant? If you are sure its white smoke and not blue. if its blue, its just valve stem seals.
