Subject: TV cable adjustment

Does anybody have pictures of what they are talking about as far as TV cable adjustment? I know which cable I am supposed to be looking at, I just don't know how to make adjustment.

PROCEDURE

Turn ignition switch to OFF position and shift into Park.
Remove air cleaner.
Disconnect cable end from attachment stud on throttle body.
Verify that transmission throttle lever is in idle (full forward) position. Then be sure lever on throttle body is at curb idle position.
Insert a small screwdriver under edge of retaining clip and remove retaining clip.
Center cable end on attachment stud to within 1 mm (0.039 inch) and release cable button.
Install retaining clip onto cable: housing.
Check cable adjustment. Be sure transmission throttle lever and lever on throttle body move simultaneously and as described in cable adjustment checking procedure.

More importantly. With the throttle lever in the idle position with the TV cable attached, how much play do you have in the cable if you grab it by the actual cable and not the clip that hooks it to the throttle lever? (moving from front to back) No play? I have about 1/8" or slightly less play.

On my 2000 3.9, there is a white bracket with a 'T' on it, pop it off and you can slide the cable tubing in or out, in (towards cab) to increase cable tension and raise shift points, out to decrease tension and lower shifts. Hold it in place where you want it and reinsert the bracket to lock it in place. If there is play in the cable, you shifts might be low, but it probably varies truck to truck.

Oh yeah, I don't know what truck you have, but on mine there's a little cone shaped piece on the end of the cable tubing, and from the side you can look at how far it's coming out of the housing as a good reference on how far you moved it. Make little moves at a time, like barely 1mm, and test.
