with some of you guys help i think that the noise in my engine is comming form the timming chain. its a 93' 3.9L with about 96tho miles on. I think it might need replacing before it hit the big 100. The haynes book makes it look like a bitch to replace. is it nessisary to completly take everything off of the engine to do this. WHERE DO YOU EVEN START? what kind of new gaskets and chain/gears do i need to get. how long will this take? if idecide to not open pandoras box on this project how much could i expect to pay at a good shop

hey kyle
dont know if you caught all our post on the chains but when you do get to it
make your choice of either the stock replacement with a tensioner or a "true" double roller
if you just replace the chain and gears
your going to get that rattle back before tolong
and yes everything has to come off the front of the motor also good time to check over belt and hoses and also if the water pump has never been changed if you have the few extra bucks it will be easier to replace it know versus later
also anytools you need that you dont have check with your local large parts stores
Ex. advanced & auto zone most have tool loan programs...

Just take your time doing it. Get a new water pump and hoses. Its not that hard to do really, just time consuming. and yes everyting has to come off of the front of the motor,

any one have part numbers for a water pump and timming chain, i have the same truck as kyle here. where can i get these at? do you have to disconcect all the ac lines to get this done? what about the fan how do you take that off?

I just replaced my timing chain on my 93 Dakota two weekends ago.
I put on a Cloyes true roller, double roller timing chain set. Overall, it was pretty easy, but it took a lot of work.
Drain the coolant and the oil.
Take the serpentine belt off.
The the fan off (BIG wrench for the big nut and you'll need a strap wrench to hold it in place) and take the fan shroud off.
Take the alternator off.
Unbolt the A/C compressor and move it to the side.
Remove the brackets that hold both of those in place.
Take the waterpump off
Remove the harmonic balancer bolt
Turn the crankshaft so that the mark on the balancer is pointing at TDC.
Use a puller to remove the harmonic balancer
Remove the timing chain cover
Replace the chain, lining up the marks on the sprockets.
Put it all back together.

what kind of noise was it making before? Where is the harmonic balancer? How do you turn the crank so the marker is pointing at the Tdc? where is the marker? and what is the tdc? sorry guys im only 16 and dont have too much knowledge of engines?- but i love my lil' kota.
