Subject: 90 Dakota, just clicks sometimes/startin
IP: Logged

Message:
Replaced the wiring and coil last month. Had a bad
wire somewhere. Could see it arching to the air cleaner
cover in the dark when someone turned it over.

This morning and at lunch it just clicked once, then
nothing. Had to try two or three times and then it would
turn over. Is it usually a starter solenoid?

Thanks

Mine just started doing this.
I take it you haven't found the problem with this? Has yours been
doing for long?
I thought it may be a bad spot on the starter. But I'm unsure and
don't want to pull off anything unnecessary.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like you guys need a starter solenoid. a friend of mine with a toyota had the same problem a couple weeks ago. replaced the starter/solenoid and it works great.

yea i agree with jeremy. it is the starter solenoid that is causing yalls problems. if it just plain wont start at all, get something and tap on the solenoid on the starter and this usually is a quick fix.

it is on the starter. there are two parts to the starter, the solenoid and the starter motor. the solenoid is the smaller of the two parts. the starter is on the passenger side of the motor connected to the bellhousing.

Have you checked the battery cable? Sometimes if it is loose, you could just get the click. If thats not it then it is probobly the solenoid.

Not sure about the 99 dakato but the 1990 is older and maybe you should check the terminals you have 2 wires on the hot side, 1 is a starter wrire , could be coming loss

check terminals over really good
Get battery tested
then try and see if start is stuck
then go buy a new solenoid

yep.. I'm always doing SOME type of electrical work to my truck and I usualy take my positive wire off the battery and if its not secured on nice and tight, you will get that clicking... Try cleaning the terminals and making a SNUG fit on the battery with the cable before you go and buy additional parts. good luck! Let us know something!

Thanks for the replies. The battery cables was the first thing I
checked when it clicked the first time, but I was on my way to
work and in a hurry. So I'm going to re-check them, that's a
good idea.
I picked up a rebuilt starter last night, it was over $50.00
cheaper than just the solenoid alone, due to it being made by
Mitsub.
I'll have to check around at other supply stores before I ever
install the starter. First I'll try the other suggestions.

Thanks, Randy

I'm having the same problem on my '99, only now it'll sometimes take 15+ attempts to start. Battery terminals are tight so I'll start by taking a look at the contacts on the solenoid.
