Message: would appreciate opinions, as we all have the 3.9. i have a 2000, 3.9, 35,000 kms., and tried castrol syntec about a year ago. heard it wasn't a "true" full synthetic, so i went to mobil 1. both were 10w-30. after about 1000 kms., i have a slight tappet type noise, from the right side cylinders. i'm told that this is common with mobil 1. i'm also told that castrol syntec 0w-30, german made, is a true full synthetic, and would do well in my 3.9. i'm in windsor, ontario, across the creek from detroit, and with our winters, would like to know if this 0w-30 would be too thin. thankyou.

Message: "oil" has been a favorite study of mine for years. I had a whole class on it in college; I personally drive 35k miles a year, tow alot, and maintain approx 15 vehicles. anyway, 0W-30 is just fine. Syntec is a highly refined mineral oil base stock. As far as 0-30 syntec being a group IV "real" synthetic? that would be news to me. I'll go look for the data sheets from Castrol & see what I can find. Years ago Mobil sued to block Castrol from calling Syntec "synthetic". the problem is, the definition of "synthetic" is fuzzy. Basically, the industry calls fake synthetics group III oil (made from mineral oil) and real synthetics are group IV - made from PAO base stocks. The only "real" synthetics I know of are Mobil 1, Amsoil (except their XL line) Red line, Royal purple. there are a few specialty brands out there - but these are the most common.

Message: tc --what motor/vehicle do you have, and what oil do you use ? the gc 0w-30, green or gold, is the only "true" full synthetic castrol makes, and their only one that is pao (grp. iv) based, and acea a3 rated. the other syntec grades are grp. 3 based.

Message: i was just at "part source", and discovered that there is another castrol 0w-30. it has a yellow label, with snowflakes on it. it's u.s. made, with sj and acea a1 ratings, and was mixed in with the gc 0w-30. i guess that you learn something new every day.

Message: I've got a 98 Ram with the 5.2; (tows alot) a Dakota with the 3.9; a Grand Cherokee w the 4.7 I also put 200K on a comanche & 150K on a cherokee - both with the 4.0 and both did alot of towing. I have been using Amsoil in everything but the ram - changing oil every 10K (amsoil makes the ram leak at the rear seal, so I use Mobil 1 in that) I have never had a transmission problem, even with all the towing. I change the trans fluid every year. I've used Syntec in the past in the Ram - but have stuck to Mobil 1 lately because its priced right & easy to find at walmart.

Message: RP is considered an excellent oil, with great UOA's (used oil analysis). right up there with amsoil, GC 0w-30, and M1. (as stated in my initial post, M1 10w-30 caused a tappet noise in my 3.9L motor, and GC 0w-30 seems to have cured it). to tc -- no tappet noise in your ram with
M1 ?

Message: i tried GC 0w-30, and have developed a small front main seal leak. i don't think it's an issue of a synthetic cleaning sludge from the seal, since i've done many oil changes on a motor with only 35,000 kms., so there should be very little sludge. would a seal conditioner to swell the seal help ? if so, which brand ? i don't want to do a seal replacement, if at all possible. thankyou for your opinions. p.s.- i asked the BITOG people ,as well.

Message: I would recommend Castrol GTX High Mileage if you are having
leaking problems. It is made from group II base stock but is
also 20% group V. Group V works very well for cleaning sludge
out of the engine and helps swell seals.
