Subject: Truck won't stay running IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys, I had a post on here last week about a problem I've been having...
"Hi, I'm having a problem with my '97 Dakota (3.9L V-6 2WD). The truck wont start when you turn the key, the engine turns over but wont catch unless you push the throttle to about 2500rpms. If you ease up on the throttle to anything less than 1000rpms it stalls (it usually idles at about 500-600rpms). To get it into gear you have to push the gas and brake at the same time, but once its in gear, its like there was nothing ever wrong with it. Any suggestions to what the problem might be? This just started today, and there are no previous problems with the engine or anything like that. Thanx in advance for the help! :)"
Well, this weeks problem is the same, except now I can't keep it running at stop lights/signs ect...basically anything that slows it down to 1st gear (its auto), and when I do start off from a light/sign, it jumps forward (almost feels like it starts in 2nd) and tries to stall. It does this for about 15-20 mins (till its at running temp) then it's great...nothing was ever wrong. I'd love to warm it up in the morning, but it won't stay running long enough to do this, unless it's being driven...without stop lights/signs...which in Toronto...is impossible! If anyone has any slight idea as to whats up with my truck please respond...I'm hoping it's not too expensive, in the last month and a half I've replaced the water pump, and both lower ball joints...I'm tapped out!!!! :(
Thanx again, ~Sandy~

Message: sandy, i would recommend that you clean the IAC valve on the back of the throttle body. the IAC valve (intake air control) is what controls your idle. some times, it gets gummed up and doesnt move like it should or just plain sticks. it is held on by two t25 torx head screws on the back of the tb. remove it and disconnect the plug from it. then take some carb cleaner and spray all of the funk off of it. you could use an old tooth brush on it, just be careful not to push in or twist the plunger. also, make sure that you clean the inside of the tb where the valve came out of. reinstall it and reconnect the wires and try it. you could also try running a half a can of seafoam in the gas tank and the other down the tb. just a few cheap and easy fixes that could help you out.
GET IN, SIT DOWN, SHUTUP, AND HOLD ON custom 48mm tb, tps @ .768, relocated IAT, 180 t-stat, autolite double platinum, taylor wires, flowmaster 40 delta flow single in/dual out, CAI

Message: If above doesn't fix it - check the connections to and the IAT sensor ( Intake Air Temp. )
passenger side - just in front of throttle body.

Message: Dave is on the right track, I thought it was called an Auto Idle Sensor, but yes that is the part and the remedy, if I don't use TB cleaner about twice a year I get the same problem. It is not major. But it is a pain to drive that way.
Good luck

Message: Hey guys, I just wanted to thank you all for the help, and letcha know the outcome. I took it into Goodyear, and my mechanic said the IAC and Throttle Plates were really, really dirty, so he cleaned 'em, and he had to reset all the adaptives?! The truck runs better now then it did when I bought it!!! And she's finally grown some balls (she was shamefully slow before)!! Anyways, thanx again for all the advice. I should be back on here in another 2 wks (she had no problems for 1.5 yrs, and now every 2-3 wks something either grinds, clunks, squeals, or just plain well won't move). LOL, if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck! :)

I have exactly the same truck you do, how many miles on it. It might be time for a good tune up. Rotor, Cap, Spark plug wires and Spark Plugs.
Whenwas the last time you have had your brakes checked?
Just asking, something to think about.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: LOL! I have fixed and replaced sooo many things on that truck it's not even funny. The brakes were done first, friggin' $570CAD, they did something with/to the rotors (they weren't flat?!), turned the drums, cleaned and adjusted rear brakes, anti-squeal crap, and some part that they got off and couldn't get back on?!(that part was $75...jerks!)! Did or do you have problems with your DRL? Mine died, then my highbeams would flash on and off for no reason, and no dummy lights...lol...got alot of fingers that week! Ah well, just waiting for the next thing to go...probably my tranny, she's slipping alot lately...I used Slick 50, and it worked awesome for the first year, but now she's slipping again.
Besides the fact that it drove me into a wall, I never had this many problems with my Ranger...of course trying to kill me is a problem I guess! Have a good one! ;)
