I've got a 1993 Dakota 3.9 with about 145,000 miles on it. It has made a rattly, pinging noise for years, and has progressively gotten worse. I suspect the intake manifold plenum gasket is leaking. Looking down through the throttle body throat, I do see some oil in the the bottom on the manifold. But how how much of that is normal because of sucked in through the PCV hose?

is it wet with oil? it could also be your timing chain. is the rattle coming from the from the front of the engine? if so, it's probably the timing chain.

It is actually wet with oil. Plus it consumes maybe one quart every 1500-2000 miles. I've also considered the timing chain, but the noise seems to come from all over the engine. What's wierd is that when I'm accelerating down the road, the tach will hit 2100-2200 and the noise shuts off. I'm starting to wonder if it isn't lifter noise and that's the RPM that the oil pump finally pumps up enough pressure to shut the lifters up. But on the other hand, the noise seems to be worse under throttle load rather than being PURELY RPM dependent. I'm thinking that maybe at 2100 the manifold leak shuts closed or else the knock sensor decides to correct the pinging at that time.

just start the truck warm and bend down and look
under the front bumper stick your head down there
you will hear it.

Chris, I just went through the same thing. I replaced the plenum gasket and it didn't change. I found that if you get under the truck, while it's running, and put a stethescope on the bottom of the timing cover, right in front of the oil pan, you can hear the rattle that is caused from the chain. I replaced the chain, and added the tensioner, and it's all good now.

While the timing chain probably is causing a rattle, I don't think that it is your only problem. I also have pinging on my engine, usually going up hills, half throttle. My chain rattles also, but I usually only notice it at idle. The two problems have distinctly different noises.

You can replace the timing chain and that may get rid of one noise, but I think that your pinging issue will still be there.

I looked at the part about the ignition and the coil wire inducing voltage to the spark plug wires. I am going to try the fix recommeded for that this weekend. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks to eveyone for your responses.

"97Dakota3.9", I tried to follow your link to Daddio's post, but it just led me to an index page after logging in.

I read about the ignition wire interference issue somewhere - just one more possibility to consider. That's the problem. There is a whole fist-full of things that can be causing noise in the 3.9 engine and I hate the thought of digging into the engine from all different directions just to eliminate the possibilities one at a time.

Let me know the results of your wire rerouting exercise. Thanks

Chris, that's not a post. it's a website with TSB's, diagnostic info and How to's. that index opage is where you input the info of the vehicle you need help with. it has a plethora of info.

Well, I rerouted the coil wire today. Unfortunately the problem remains. I will post more later.
