Subject: engine surging IP: Logged
Message: I have engine surging at 45 - 50 mph with and without cruise control enabled. The rpm goes up and down ~200 rpm.
I have 2000 V-6 engine in a 98 body. The throttle body is a v-8. Gas mileage is ~16 mpg for in town driving. I have change the air filter, plugs, rotor button and cap.
I did not notice this until the throttle body and a rear O2 sensor change. Also, I had a constant check engine light with a code for the rear O2 sensor. We changed the 12 Volt supply wire to the sensor and the light went out. The surging started at this point.

Message: This has happened to other people as well, and it turned out to be the TPS.

Message: Throttle Position Sensor located on the driverside of the throttle body. Held in by 2 torx screws and has a harness/plug connector with 3 wires. Inside is a variable rheostat(resistor) that changes resistance/voltage as your throttle valve transitions from closed throttle to wide open throttle. If there is a break or "flat" spot on the resitor windings, that with cause a bucking or surging effect on the motor because it confuses the PCM on who open the throttle plates actually are. If you check it with an analog ohmmeter and rotate the throttle valve open and shut(slowly) you should get a gradual increase and decrease in resistance. If it jumps, you probably have a bad TPS.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Okay, cruzindoug "analog ohmmeter", "flat spots", "variable resistor"? You may be a well informed mechanic or perhaps an electrician but my guess a person trained and experianced in electronics.
Only a field pro knows needle spikes on an analog meter shows flat spots where digitals suck. You're busted and valued to assist on these issues. Good help tips!

Message: Another thing is if the tps checks out have someone tap the sensor with screw driver while you check it.
My tps was bad an i went out to check it and all seemed well. I then relized the motor normally vibrates so I tapped the TPS while going through the postitions and what mine would do is a quick sharp drop then display the correct position...
Replaced the tps and my chugging problem under acceleration disappeared.
