Subject: Hard starting when cold.
IP: Logged

Message:
My 1995 pickup with a 3.9 and 4WD cranks for an extended time (3 to 5 seconds) after sitting for a few hours. I suspect that the problem is a bad check valve in the fuel pump allowing fuel to flow back into the tank when not running. The Haynes service book says that the fuel pump gets power only when the engine is cranking or running. It does not get power when the ignition switch is on but engine is not running. Can someone tell me what wire needs to be jumpered that would allow the fuel pump to get power whenever the ignition switch is on, instead of when the engine is turning? That would solve my problem without having to spend $600.00 for a fuel pump replacement.

Thanks!

It would be unwise to configure it that way. It's designed not to run when the engine is off to reduce the chance of fire in the event of a collision. Better to fix the check valve.

a leaky injector can also cause long crank times.

when first put the key in the on position, the pump should prime for about 2 seconds. you can turn the key on, let the pump prime, then turn the key off and back on to let the pump prime a couple times, then crank. thats a cheap, temporary fix, if your check valve has stuck open. but its not that hard to change the pump yourself.

$225 for a new pump. Pull the bed off, and it only takes you about 15 minutes. The hardest part is unscrewing that damn plastic locking nut:)

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

it does work, but it gets old after a while. that and when you have remote start, you cant cycle the ignition when your not at the vehicle. ;) but i replaced my fuel pump about 3 months ago. at NAPA it cost me $250 i opted to drop the tank, as i didnt want to take my bed off, it sounded like more of a chore.

its pretty easy to take the bed off. a lot easier than dropping the tank. only thing is if you have a bedliner your SOL when it comes to that.

I do have a bed liner.

Cycling the key switch is not that big a deal since I only have to do it if the truck has been sitting for more than a few hours.

It would be nice if there was a way to increase the pump priming time (when the key is turned on) from 2 seconds to say, 10 seconds. But my guess is, it's probably a fixed time period that is set in the software of the computer or ignition module.

Why are you SOL if you have a bedliner? There are NO bolts inside the bed that you have to get to. You have 6 bolts UNDER the bed...2 front, 2 middle, and 2 back, and you have the fuel filler hose that is connected by 4 philips head screws, and finally you have the wire harness for the tail lights...that's it. The just lift and pull the bed back about 1.5 to 2 feet and the tank and pump are right there.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

So, when it comes time to crawl on my back under the truck in my driveway, which method is quicker and easier.... Dropping the tank, or removing the bed? Does someone reading this have first-hand experience?

Thanks

First hand experience with both, and pull the bed was by far the easiest. 6 bolts, wireharness for the tail lights, and 4 screws for the fuel filler hose. Pick up on back of bed and pull back about 1.5 to 2 feet, and the pump is right there. Takes about 15 minutes to pull the bed, 10-15 minutes to change the pump, and 10-15 minutes to put the bad back in place. So an hour tops for this.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Yeah, taking off the bed sounds easier, especially if the tank has a lot of gas in it! It's always easier to work on TOP of something than UNDER it!

Thanks!

My son just bought a 95 Dakota and inherited the cold starting problem. We were told it had more to do with the computer than fuel pump. When cold a relay will click rapidly for a few seconds when you turn the key, but it takes a few cycles before the pump is primed and the truck starts. The other option that seems to work is to leave the ignition switch on until the engine light comes on and goes off. No problem when warm. Has anyone replaced a computer part and fixed the starting problem? Thanks.
