 Subject: error codes

I went to autozone and got my 1998 3.9 scanned
results
code# p1391 intermettent loss of CMP or CKP
the thing is gas guzzling even with a K&N type air cleaner
truck starts runs fine no stalling
no missing or hesitation or black smoke
just that engine light comes on
any ideas????

Possible " dirty " - poor connections
either to computer or in harness to crank position sensor-=- it is at rear of engine in the bellhousing - just down and a little to passenger side of distributor..
How many miles on truck ?
Possible poor 02 sensor causing more problem than anything else - it won't necessarily throw a code
at least not until it is really BAD..

dunno true history of truck
has a rebuilt title from new jersey I have fla title need to have right side door locksmithed
so I assume it was in a wreck drives new/straight smooth shifting and starting just that engine light is annoying odometer reads 30k +-
runs like a champ...tight
will look at that thing
old saying touch it up mess it up
any further tips appreicated
I want better MPGs

I ran into a lead
disconnected the battery put the key to on position for over the recommended 20 secs (supposed to zero the errors)
so far no engine light and drove and gunned it a few times
xfingers it's gone

what does the cam position sensor do anyways
does it cause bad gas milage?

It is one of the sensors that controls timing(advance or retard) It could possibly be affecting MPG, but not absolutly certain. It could also be the crank pos sensor, which does the same thing. Check that one as well, it will probably be made of plastic and might be cracked causing your code.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
