Message: I was late for an appointment yesterday and was speeding on the highway when I realized that I was doing 100mhp at ~3000rpm. The speedometer ends at 110mph. I wasn't flooring the pedal and I could get higher. So I wonder - V6 hp tops at 4400rpm, and with speedometer topping at 110mph we never get to max speed at max hp, right?

Message: Sure, it's not bad at all. Did you notice at what rpm you're getting it? My point is, you can do a lot of mods to get more hp but it won't benefit you if it's in high rpm. It's better to invest in low end and in torque.

Top speed for me has been just over 135 mph.

Message: its because an auto is very Consistent down the 1/4. but an auto vs manual in a stock dakota, the manual would be faster with a good driver behide the wheel.

Message: There is also a big difference between stock manual setups and manuals set up for racing. How far do you think you can go in stock class? Whether you run Stock or Pro Stock autos are still the best choice. It's cool to shift and I wouldn't have anything else in a sports car but doesn't mean I'm going to tell everyone that they are quicker or better.
It is far cheaper to mod the existing auto, assuming it is one worth it, than it is to swap in a manual.

Message: N56629,
Thats a nice setup you have there. Now that you have quite a few mods on that truck why get it dyno-ed and see what kind of hp you are getting at the rear wheels.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: You are right it is true to modify the existing auto rather than swap in a manual trans.
But with an stock automatic versus a stock manual transmission you have to think of this.
Manual Clutch fully engaged. Engine rotates transmission with no slippage.
Automatic - torque converter always has some slippage and therefore a slight loss in power.
So a manual doesn't "produce" more power, it just creates less limit on the power potential, or has less power loss.

Message: I left out it "is cheaper" at the end of my first sentence.
Also, you are still missing the point. Transmissions in general - auto or manual - are completely different in heavily modified drag cars than in stock vehicles.
If I were going to build a drag truck out of my dakota, then I would go with an automatic like you suggested. But it would include a locking torque convertor (eliminates slippage from stock convertor) plus a shift kit, which would then give an advantage over the manual due to the elimination of the clutch.

Message: it's me again just wanted to let u guys know my tranny is finally going in my truck after having 220,000 miles on it. i bought the truck used it was a company cow breeding truck. then abused as a carpentry truck. i went to a local junk yard and found a 1999 regular cab dakota short box sport with the same color and everything. i bought every thing but the back half of the frame. for 1500 bucks the motor and trans have 54,00 miles it was hit slightly in the front so it is lacking left fender and grill. but all in all a steal for a 99 dakota sport. i think i'm gonna take the trans and drop it in if i cant find a manual to switch it up with. the motor has already been changed in my truck i'm driving it has curently 66,00 miles if any 1 would like a 1998 dakota reply to this and we'll talk further
