 Subject: 2002 Dak steering problem?

My 2002, 4dr dakota has developed a very annoying grinding/whirring sound and vibration whenever I turn the steering wheel even slightly to the left from dead center at 10mph and up. It makes no sound at dead center or to the right.
What I've done so far...
- rotated the tires
- 2-wheel alignment
Could it be the rack and pinion? wheel bearing?
I'm at a loss!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
