Message: I had mine replaced by a mechanic apparently there are two of them and they throw out the same code when they go bad so you cant tell which one is bad and i guess you need to replace both of them to be sure? It cost about 150 to do it and i never got my hands dirty. I didn't get my wallet fatter either, or learn anything, but that is all i can tell you.

Message: you do not have to replace both of them..
only one actually checks speed, the other is there as part of a loop. If your speedometer doesnt work until 20-30 mph and/or your have a ABS light on and/or your Brake light on, you need to replace the VSS located on top of the differential.
it's about a $35-50 piece and is very easy to replace... just one bolt and a wiring harness.

Message: The other is around your torque converter...behind the transmission bellhouse. Just follow the bellhousing back...you'll see it. It's a little thing threaded into the metal attached to a little wire harness. Easier to find than to describe. I had to change it on my truck...cost like $28 at Autozone I think and took about 5 minutes to change. Forewarning...when you unplug it, it's gonna dump tranny fluid all over your head if you're directly underneath it.
The symptoms I had were...Check Engine Light and tranny shifted funny. It would hang up in first gear and you'd have to let off the gas to get it to shift and it shifted weird after that but wouldn't necessarily hang up...just shifted earlier than normal and stuff like that.

Message: *bellhousING... I can't type tonight. If that's the one you need to change, you can prolly get one of the guys at the auto parts store to describe it better or even show you. Otherwise post back and I'm sure I could prolly take a pic for you or something.

Message: I figured I'd tell him since when I was told how to do it, I wasn't warned...and yes, I had tranny fluid dumped all over me. I expected SOME to come out, but not THAT much all at once. lol

Message: it's on the tail of the tranny. you probably won't lose more than a quart if you don't leave that hole open too long. or you could back up an incline and you probably wouldn't lose any fluid.

Message: jon,
if yours is doing the syptoms i mentioned above, you need to replace the VSS that is located on top of the differential. One bolt, one wiring harness... easy... no loss of fluid.

Message: I meant it was BEHIND the bellhousing...but thanks. I couldn't remember what it's actual location was called. Tailshaft...noted.
If it's not the sensor Intense is talking about it's the one on the...tailshaft.
I just took this pic. Sorry it's not real helpful, but it's hard to lay underneath my truck (after it's been raining) and take a pic from under there while trying to pull my entire body underneath because THAT'S when all the cars decide to come down the street. The black object on the right is the tranny pan...as you go towards the left side of the pic, you're heading straight back towards the back of the truck. The sensor's prolly about a foot straight back from the tranny pan. It's circled in red.
