Message: I recently ran my Dakota on the chassis dyno and got pretty weird results. The stock V6 has 175hp at the engine. I have 4WD so I recon it loses ~30% untill it gets to the wheels. So it should be ~120hp at the wheel. Now I have a bunch of performance improvements: Gibson 3" exhaust (sweet sound, btw), JBA headers, K&N FIPK intake, JET stage 2 chip, 180C thermostat, Crane TB spacer. Naturally I expected to measure more than 120hp. But the dyno result was 114hp at 4074rpm! Does it make any sense? I'm cruising at 85mph at 2400rpm and the acceleration is pretty awesome. Does it look like 114hp?

Message: I have a hard time seeing a TB spacer really hindering the truck that much. That sucks I can't imagine how it's only putting out 114 with those mods. Stock I could understand as sad as it is but not after you've done what you have.

Message: Yeah I doubt it has anything to do with TB spacer. It was one of the first mods I did and I didn't notice any difference. I suspect that the dyno guys screwed up something with the setup when they ran my truck. It's one of these newer chassis dynos, not roller dyno but the one that you remove the wheels and connect the dyno. I'll go back to the shop and grill them a bit about the setup they used.

Message: First, throw away that TB spacer. It's nothing but a paper weight. Even if it hinders it a bit, its still useful HP. Plus, 3 inch extaust is complete over kill on a N/A. Boosted I could see but your rig doesn't have enough back pressure. Also, jet chips are useless also, Go back and tone it down to a 2.5 at the most, with a superchips and you'll be happier with those results.

Message: What good is back pressure, Einstein? The idea is to get the exhaust out of the engine, not try to keep it in.
Go back to watching Two Queers Garage and leave this discussion to those who know WTF they are talking about. Moron.

Message: You need some backpressure or you lose all your low-end torque...not sure how it would affect the HP though. I agree that it could be the 3-inch exhaust. Also, Gunner had the same issue...and when they contacted the guys from Harland Sharp (were dynoing to see what kind of difference the Harland Sharp RR's did) they said to peak it at a lower RPM or something...which made a pretty big difference. Let me find the thread about it...

Message: Okay...got the information a little messed up...
Dynoed my truck today with my custom CAI and the Harland Sharp roller rockers. I initially pulled 10hp and 35tq LESS than the first run!! They ran the truck 5 times, all with the same results. Finally, a guy faxed DynoJet my results and the pros said to peak the 3.9L at a lower RPM. Sure enough, we Dyno my truck again, and I made up all of the lost HP/TQ. I ended up with 130 HP and 199 TQ which is less than what I started with 3 weeks and $300 worth of parts ago. I lost some, but at least I didn't lose as much as I thought I was going to.
The guys said that my truck was running ridiculously RICH (which doesn't surprise me, since I already burned up one catallytic converter). They said that's the main reason my truck lost so much power. I asked what I could do about it and he said that putting on the larger TB will help alot. He also recommended clearing the computer and looking into headers. The guy also said he had the same problem with a Corvette he owned. He put a CAI and a Flowmaster on it and lost something like 30 HP. But, he bought a TB that matched the CAI and picked up 44 HP from just adding the TB.
Anyway, the point I'm getting to is that I will hopefully free up all of that HP/TQ that is available thru the CAI and roller rockers by adding the TB. *sigh* What a day.

Message: Thanks, this is interesting info. First of all I'm gonna check with dyno guys about peaking at lower rpm. Maybe this will explain some of the results. My point is that regardless of the dyno results the truck runs great, much better than before mods. That's why I'm more suspicious of the dyno setup rather than some problematic mod. And btw, where I can get the larger TB for 1st gen V6 magnum?

Message: Hey 95V6-
I feel your pain, man. I'm getting a little disappointed about my little 3.9L. I think there is probably one mod that I'm missing that will make all the difference in the world and open up a bunch of HP. Tell me if you find the magic cure!
daveshotdako-
Put the TB on (finally) yesterday. It pulls pretty good and there is a noticable difference in the higher RPMs. Not as big of a difference as I was hoping, but it was well worth the $150. I will put the truck on the Dyno again on Thursday to see what we got (please God make my truck pull alot better!!).
GB2000-
Thanks for remembering me and getting my info out there. Maybe someone can give me some help due to your posts!
