Subject: Help With Grinding sound IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 slt cc v6 that has a loud grinding sound when its first started after sitting all night. This sound continues until it warms up. It only has 48000 miles on it and it seems to be coming from the engine or something else in the front. I have never opened the hood while it is making that sound. Does anyone have any ideas about what this sound could be?

Message: Now this is taking a completely wild guess. I'm not sure it would go away once it warms up, but you could be dealing with a bearing failing in the alternator. The best way to check is to leave the truck idling, open the hood, and use a little stethescope tool to probe around. You'll know if it's the alternator when you touch the case of the alternator- I hope I don't have to tell you not to stick it anywhere near the coils!
Otherwise, I cant think of what else would cause your problems. Did you check your power steering fluid level? Might be a good idea.
I'm not sure otherwise. What if you rev up the engine with the truck in park a little bit? Does the sound continue, or go away? Maybe an idler pully somwhere...
Good luck, hope this helps some.

Message: I noticed that it only does it when the truck is in gear (drive or reverse). Once you start moving the sound stops. I drove through Hardees drive thru, while it was still cold, and the sound continued until I put it in park. The power steering fluid level is fine.

Message: Mine is doing that same noise too. I thought that it was
the catalytic converter. Mine does it sometimes when
I'm on the highway going up a hill when the engine is
working a little more.
I've got the 99 cc too. JBCOOL, can you feel it a little in
the steering wheel when you turn right after you crank it
up? That's what mine is doing. Yeah I'd like to figure out
what this is too.
Someone had told me that it might be my catalytic c.,
and I was going to check and see if there was
something loose and just rattling.
Sorry I couldn't help you, but i'm suffering from the same
problem.

Message: Now that's a strange problem. The park-drive deal is wierd. I'm going to talk to my dad and see what he thinks.

Message: My dakota had a grinding/squealing sound that at first would only come around when it was cold outside. Then after a particularly brutal offroad trip, it was doing it all the time. I figured it was my cv's, and I decided the cheapest way to fix the problem was to just turn the radio up. One day I noticed the truck riding like crap and rolled the window down (and turned the radio down), and heard a crunching sound. Sure enough, wore the front driveshaft out. A trip to the junkyard and $82 later, problem was solved.
How deep can that pond possibly be?

Message: I had something similar but sound coming from front of the engine water pump area and I saw some coolant leaking on the water pump the big thing that sounds familiar is how when its in gear and moving the sound goes away but at a light 5 mins down the road its back but after its pretty well warmed up it USUALLY goes away, so I've replaced the water pump and as soon as I get the heater outlet hose to stop leaking I'll find out how well it went.
