Message: to begin with, i have a 2000 dakota quad cab v6 2wd auto. my front tires are gone. they are completley bald on the outside but still have decent traction on the inside. what could be causing this? balljoints? alignment? tie rod ends? control arm bushings?

Message: i've got the same truck as you except 5sp manual. i rotate the tires about every 10k and they are wearing evenly. 52k miles and no alignment. of course i got rid of the original BADYEARS @ 26k.
i think the factory alignment sets them up like that. don't remember if it's caster or camber.
anyway, are they cupping or wearing evenly? if they were cupping i'd worry about some of the parts if not a simple alignment or rotation should fix it.

Message: they are not cupping but they are wearing only on the outside and only on the front. when i bought the truck, the dealer had put brand new tires on the rear and rotated the old rear tires to the front. i have only put 10k on it since i bought it and the front tires were so worn that i couldnt rotate them to the rear unless i wanted slicks on the rear. i do live in northeast georgia in the mountains so i see a lot of curvy roads. i have researched tires and i think that i am going to go with the yokohama geolander h/t-s g051 all season highway tires (235/75sr15). any other advice on my situation would be greatly appreciated.

Message: Dave '
Does your truck drive straight or do you have to favor one side to make it straight? I would say when you go to put new tires on get an alignment.
Then keep an eye on how the new tires wear.

Message: i think if you get an alignment after the new tires are on you'll be ok.

Message: Dave, It is probably the balljoints. I was having the same problem and I have change all of the balljoint except the driver upper and it has slowed down the wear a quite a bit. And also I have had to tighted the bolt on top of the control that was loose for some reason. Noticed it was loose when I changed the upper passenger side balljoint. Try those 2 things out and see if that help. Oh and thanks for the replies to my post.

Message: there was a post about this a few weeks back, and it's the factory alignment that causes the outer wear on the tire. don't recall the poster, but he explained it well, and had his truck aligned to counter this. +/- camber was the issue, if memory serves.

Message: The Dakotas are factory spec'd at 1.5 degrees of positive camber, so the wheels on the front will lean to the outside, wearing the outside edges. When I had my truck aligned, I requested -.5 degrees of camber, so the wheels would lean ever so slightly to the inside. I am very happy with the wear on the tires after 12000 miles; the fronts and rears look the same, as far as wear pattern.

Message: you should be under the 10yr 100k extended balljoint warranty from DC as part of the recall. just in case you need it.
