 Subject: Water pump/hose hole

Did I need a new water pump? The mechanic said I did, so I paid $590 for him to replace it, install new thermostat and anti-freeze, and flush system. When I went to drive it 3 days later, there was no anti-freeze in truck. Brought it back in. Mechanic now says there is a hole in a hose that he didn't see before and it will be another $231 to replace it! Do you agree with me that he should have found this hole in the first place, and maybe I didn't need the pump at all? And, if he had flushed the system like he said he had, wouldn't he have noticed the hole during the first visit in? Please answer ASAP. I feel I was ripped-off. Thanks

maybe you did, maybe you didn't need that water pump. But that machanic sounds a bit shaddy.He should have noticed a hose with a hole in it when he did the flush.I would take it back and talk to the manager of the shop, And tell them what happened a see if the will fix it for free the right way.

i can't say if you actually needed the waterpump but man, that's expensive. and another $231 to replace a hose! that's way outta line. did you get the old parts back? always tell them you want the old parts back before they do the work.

I feel he should have noticed the hose leak when he did the flush too. This tells me that he didn't even do the flush...just charged me for it.
I think he just did a visual scan of the hoses, and because he couldn't see a hole anywhere at that time, determined that it was the pump.
But, when I brought it in for the 2nd time and he found the hole, he said it was in such an area that he couldn't get to it to see it clearly the first time...unbelievable! He certainly should have seen it the first time, either by thoroughly inspecting all the hoses, or by flushing the system.
I think the problem all along was just the hole in that one hose. How likely is it that I would have a hole, AND need a new pump at the same time??

You probably only needed the little By-pass hose . Which is the only hose that you can't really see without moving stuff aside. that shouldn't cost you $230 to fix it. The hose is only $7- $10 at the most. Good luck, hope you get everything resolved.

wow.
the water pump is a pain to replace...but wow thats a lot of money...
take off the fan, shround, belt, alternator, ac, accessorie bracket, then water pump.
I Cant believe it cost that much though...
a new pump is 74 dollars and reman is 34
hoses run about 12 and 18 for the upper and lower if he replaced them also. the gasket is 14 for the water pump. the thermostat is 7 dollars and the bypass hose is 7
all those prices are direct from mopar with the exception of the pump which is a duralast from autozone. which unless it was a dealer that did the work is what they used(cept it came from carquest which is cheaper)
as to the hose, at that price, it was the bypass hose which was leaking. this goes from the pump to the block. its about 4 inches long. the angle thing is complete horses hit he had to see everyangle if he took off the pump which he had to to replace it.
this is one of those crooked shops.
my guess would be that he put the hole in it to bring you back.
lucky the engine didnt seize.

That guy gives auto technicians a bad name, I would report him to the better business bureau, or atleast get some of your money back, if not all of it.

Thank you all for you advice and opinions. I have filed a chargeback with my credit card company to try to get the cost of the pump and its related labor charges back. Also, I am going to file a complaint with Consumer Affairs. If all else fails, I am headed for small claims court. Your help has been very much appreciated!

why did you think the water pump might be bad in the first place? or why did the mechanic think you needed a new one. I can believe he didn't notice the leak the first time, its possible anyway but he should stand behind his work and probably charge only for parts or something...I paid about $340 for a new radiator a few months ago...mostly b/c I didn't have the ability to do it myself and neaded to go the 1600 miles home without the heat on the whole way hehe. its not always easier but always a lot more satisfying to do it yourself and almost always cheaper.
I'd be a little careful about filing a chargeback on your card in that he might plan on sueing for payment. in terms of what I think you might pay for a new water pump he could charge maybe 90 for pump for the benefit of the doubt 20 for gasket or spare hose replacement clamps etc. and as much as 3 hours labor at 75 and hour equaling 225 total thermostat (why would you need that?) I'd say 20ish parts and labor flush and fluid 100 at most so for grand total...$455 for a $135 difference...not worth court if you ask me but the point is not worth me having a shop do it either, their are some nice mechanics out there but there a bit rare and usually pretty busy, for good reason.
