Subject: '03 Dodge Dakota 4x4 Quad Cab Noise IP: Logged
Message: We have an '03 Dakota QuadCab 4x4 v6. Occasionally (one every couple of days) when you start the veh. up, put it in gear and give it gas, there is a loud moaning/revving noise from the drivers-side front end... sounds like its lower in the engine on that side... or near the axle?? The symptoms when this happens are that the truck feels like its in 4x4 Low mode (type of sound, no acceleration, ~sounds~ like its revving high, but the tach says different.
Maybe... We used to be able to get it to go away if we switched the 4x4 selector from 4x2 to 4x4 Hi and back but that doesnt work anymore... but that could have just been chance. If you push the engine for a couple mins it goes away, but is very disconcerting... baaaaad sounding.
Of course we do all our daily driving in 4x2 mode and have never really had it in 4x4 modes for anything.
We took it to the local dealer and because its intermittent there is nothing they can do until something worse happens.
Help!

Message: I'm no expert but I would check the CV shaft jionts on the front Axle, and check the front driveshaft universal joints. Make sure these joints aren't binding up. Just something to check
