Subject: Hey Larry, Coil and Ignition Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a MSD HVC High Current Ignition PN 6600, and a MSD HVC High Voltage/Current Coil PN8250. I was wondering if this was going to be too much spark, or if my truck can handle it? This is a hand me down unit that was on a Porsche that never got driven. So is this going to tear anything up?

i'll be honest and say i don't have any experience with the unit you have but i think the only problem you'll have is going through rotors and caps quicker than a stock ignition. if you don't have many mods, IMO, it will be overkill. but, hey it was free.

try just using the coil.

I do have a few mods, they are as follows:

AP3923s, Borg &warner Cap and rotor, 180* thermo, cold air intake, flowmaster 40 series, bored out 46mm tb, CPS modded, electric fan, Ford 19lb injectors, ported out my intake a little and took about an inch off of the runners, IAT moved to air tube, gutted cat only until I get the money for a high flow (mine was clogged and killing millage), use all sythentic fluids.

And if I put this coil and ignition in I will be getting some 8 mm wires, don't think that the 7's will handle it too well.

with what you have, i'd try just the coil. if you do a cam or 1.7 RR's complete with the hi-rev kit, then that ignition should really pay off. hey, you said it was a hand me down. if it's in goood shape and no trouble go ahead and install it. it wouldn't hurt.

thatnks for the replies daddio. I don't think that I will be doing the roller rockers anytime soon, I am a little short on the cash. If I keep the truck long enough I will. If I use just the coil do I have to have to resistor or will it hook just fine with out it?

Paul, the injsector really smoothed out the truck after about 1500 rpms. When I first put them in when I would start the truck cold it sounded like it had a big cam in it or something. But I am glad that I got them.

Hope your PCM won't get damage afterward. I installed one and fried my PCM.

How did it fry the PCM? I don't see how unless hooked up wrong.

Daddio, I don't think that I am going to hook up just the coil, the MSD site says that it must be used with the coil. I am going to get the tach adapter for it and try to hook it up unless someone has a good reason for me not to. And then I am going to sell it and go with the Blaster SS coil and the 6a ignition. I would like to use this one for now though.

go for it. like i said earlier, the only disadvantage i could see is possibly the cap & rotor won't last as long as with the stock ignition. and maybe it won't eat them up faster than the stock ignition.

unless you hooked it up wrong, it should have nothing to do with the pcm. the msd works off of a signal from the distributor telling it when to fire. it then sends signal to the coil and then from the coil back to the distributor then to the plugs. the only way that you could have fried your pcm is to hook up the wrong wires to the distributor. i have hooked up quite a few of these units and they have made a great improvement to every vehicle that i have installed them on. ranging from my '85 jeep cj7 with a 4.4 I6 stroker to a buddys integra. if i get the money, i am going to get one for my truck. watkinstick you said that you want a 6a. i would reccommend a 6al because of the soft touch rev limiter.

Dave, if I do sell the one I have to get a different one I will get the 6al, I just stated the 6a just for the 6 series. I want to use the one I have if I can though.

the one you have should work fine. i have read about those before. i have a 6t circle track on my jeep because it was all that i could afford at the time. i had an older 6 something on there before that my uncle gave me but it died and i had to replace it with whatever i could afford. so i went with the 6t. works fine but no rev limiter which kinda sucks because of overrevving it in the mud. but the transmission is out of my jeep right now anyway which is kinda good thing. it gets 9.5 mpg and it is only a inline 6.

Well I really don't need a rev limiter, I have the stock one on the PCM erased. I hardly ever take it over 5500 anyway. I just wanted an ignition and coil for better burn incase I do want to race one of my buddies or something. And I got this one free so I want to use it. Am I going to need a tach adapter for this one or not?

unless you plan on using an aftermarket tach, i am almost positive that you have to have the tach adapter. i have an aftermarket tach on my jeep and it plugs directly into the tach output on the msd 6t.

Yes the high output ignitions will go throw caps
fast 8 to 10,000 miles

Be sure you have good wires and run 1 colder plug

Thanks for the reply Larry, I figured I would go through the caps fast, but the is only about 5 buck to replace. I already have a colder plug and I have some better wires on the way. But will I have any other problems?
