Subject: Beware of Actron! IP: Logged
Message: I am posting this to warn anyone who is considering buying an Actron Scanner.
In Feb. I purchased an Actron Model #9145 scanner to use on my GEN.1 1990 Dakota with OBD-I diagnostics. Along with the scanner I also purchased the Chrysler OBD-I adapter cable which is advertised to work with older OBD-I chrysler vehicles. In short this unit does not work with the 1990 Dakota. I called the Actron customer service department and was informed that my truck is one of the few vehicles that this unit is not compatible with. YEAH RIGHT! He blamed it on some type of communication glitch with the Chrysler ECM. I asked why they didn't advertise this in their ads to warn potential buyers? I was told if they did that no one would buy the tool. NO SH#$$!
This tool does work with OBD-II vehicles but is useless on the Dakota. I bought this tool about six months ago and used it my 96 ram with no problems. Yesterday was the first day I used it on the Dakota. Basically I feel In have been screwed for about $350. It is to late to return the tool to Autozone for a refund.
To Hell with Actron and the false advertising methods they use.
Have good day!

Message: it worked with the ram because it's OBDII.
OBDI scanners do not work on my 89 either. It's not really false advertising unless it specifically states that it works with your 90 dakota.

Message: This product Model #9145 was advertised as working with chrysler OBD-I and OBD-II vehicles. It states that for OBD-I you must buy the proper adapter cable, which I did. Go to The Actron web site and read for yourself. It states that this scanner is good for OBD-I Chrysler products that have been manufactured since 1983. No mention about 1990 dakotas not being compatible. I am just forwarning anyone with a gen.-1 dakota not to buy this product.

Message: Are you just assuming that it is too late to return it or did Autozone actually refuse you a refund?

Message: I really wouldn't feel comfortable trying to return this unit to Autozone. It has been about 7 months and the unit is now used not new. Just because Actron screwed me I don't feel it would be correct for me to try and force Autozone to take this unit back. I just want Actron to state in their advertisements that this unit does not work with certain Chysler OBD-I vehicles. I hate companies that give you only half truths!

Message: File a complaint with the FTC. It may not get you any money back but at least they will launch an investigation into the false advertising claims, if indeed that is what they are.
BTW, most CSR don't know shlt from butter. That's why they have brown teeth. Call Actron back up and speak to somebody that means something at the company, not some min wage phone jockey. Be firendly, explain what it is you want and be firm. You might be surprised what happens when you deal with soebody with a vested interest in the company instead of venting on a web board.

Message: it sux to spend that kind of money and not have the product work properly, but why did wait 7 months to see if it works??
still try to take it back.. it's no loss on autozone's part. They'll send it back and get full cost on it.
i checked out their website and it does state the in bold that it works for 89-95 dakotas. I'd call them back like FTC said. Either way, i'd get my money back from one of them, because it is also autozone advertising Actron's product.

Message: I bought this unit to use on my 96 Ram as well as my Dakota. I did use this unit the day I bought it to diagnose some problems on the 96 Ram. It worked OK on the Ram which is OBD-II. I had no reason to use it on the Dakota until yesterday. When I bought it I paid extra money to get this model (9145) because it was stated that it would also work with the Dakota which requires an adapter for additional money. I purchased the adapter as stated in in their advertisement. I could have bought an OBD-II only scanner much cheaper. LIVE AND LEARN!
Again, my reason for posting here is to warn anyone who may be looking at buying one of these units.
Sorry for the ranting and raving but I need to vent it somewhere!
Thanks for all replies
Curt
