Subject: Stalling/ ticking problem IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
I have a 1995 dakota 3.9 automatic thats giving me trouble. It likes to stall out after being shifted into drive or reverse. Also stalls randomly when idleing at a stop. At speed it runs perfect.
Also sometimes when leaving from a stop, when I give it gas it will rev up and make a rapid ticking sound but won't move. Eventually it will catch and start to move and then its fine.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Message: My 95 3.9 auto has been doing something similar. It started with some backfiring (occasionally when accelerating from stop) through the exhaust a week ago last sunday. It has only back fired a couple of times since last sunday.
When mine stalls, the low oil light comes on and so does the check engine light. If I shift to park, turn truck off, it starts back up fine, low oil light goes off and so does the check engine light. I have checked for codes, none. My oil guage fluctuates a little. I think I have a grounding problem. I have not pulled the dash and cluster off and checked it with a voltmeter yet.
I also have the same acceleration issue. sometimes it'll rev a little, then catch up - almost like transmission slipping, but I'm not sure that is the issue. After it does it the one time, it runs fine the rest of the trip, even in stop and go traffic.
I have made no changes yet, I do have a new cap I am going to install this week.

Message: Try cleaning throttle body and IAC at back of throttle body .
possible EGR valve/solenoid problems also - unless serviced in last couple years !..

Message: Sounds like the first gear clutches have worn to a point where they are starting to chatter when the pump isn't running fast enough (idling the engine) to put sufficient pressure on the bands.
