Subject: non-interference? IP: Logged
Message: ive read a number of things about the 3.9, but im curious as all seem to be conflicting...is it a intereference type or not? if the chain breaks is it gonna hit the valves?

Message: The Pre-Mag V6's have such low compression that I think they don't interfere in a stock setup. The Mag V6's (92'-on) have fast burn heads and higher compression, so I think there is a possibility of bending valves if the chain breaks. But why go through the trouble of realigning everything if it does break? Preventative maintenance, my man.

Message: I can answer that. Yes, Yes, Yes. Timing chain broke at start-up on my 3.9 v6 99 and it bent all the valves in 1-3-5 as well as the rods and the rod on #6. I replaced all the valves and rods. I was lucky it just nicked the piston and did not gouge a hole. This job is a lot easier than my old 83 Pontiac Gran Prix.
