Subject: rear axle bearing replace?
IP: Logged

Message:
My 99 dak 4x4 3.9 engine/auto/8 1/4 rear end with limited slip has been making some noise lately in the rear end. I have been noticing increasing vibration in the truck at about 100km to 120km and now it seems to make some noise when I am driving slowly or backing up (especially when I am turning or when I am towing a trailer..increased weight).

The noise I am hearing is a clunking...almost sounds like the brake drum is catching on something. I took the drum off to see if it is rubbing/snagging on something but no luck.

When I shake the truck side to side I hear a clunking sound in the rear driver axle/drum area. Other side does not do this....

Am I right to assume that the rear axle bearing is going?

If so, is it easy to replace. I am fairly handy/mechanical. Anyone have a part number for the bearing and seal?

Anyone have any tips/instructions/advice to do the job? or should I just take it into the shop?

Thanks in advance for your replies....

Assuming you have an open rear.............
Not too bad a job. First remove brake drum, the diff cover, remove the pinion shaft lock bolt and remove the shaft. Push the axel in and remove the "C" retainer then slide the axel out. You'll need a slide hammer with internal jaws to remove the bearing. Use a screwdriver to pry out the seal and remove the bearing. Advance Auto has a new bearing/seal in a single unit or you can use the seperate pieces. Clean the housing and apply a small amount of antiseize lube to help with the bearing installiation. Using a seal driver, large socket or piece of pipe that contacts the outer race only and carefully install the new bearing then the seal. Lightly grease the new seal and slide the axel in and re-install the "C" retainer, the pinion shaft and lock bolt, torque it to 97 in/lbs. Clean the diff cover and apply a 1/4" bead of red silicone sealent making sure to circle the bolt holes and install the cover. Fill the diff with 2 quarts of 80W-90 gear lube and reinstall the plug.

Don't make extra work for yourself like I did. You do not have to remove any of the brake assembly parts.

My 2000 Dak does the same thing when you shake it side to side, it is O.K., my Dart did that too. The bearings are alright, bearings DO NOT make a vibration, just a noise. My Dakota made a snapping noise in the diff because there wasn't enough additive in the limited slip oil. I would drain the oil, put in the correct amount of additive, then drive it again. Maybe this will help.

I discovered the bad bearing hunting down a clunking sound when braking. It never made a sound othewise. I was looking for a cracked drum or rotor, but found the slop in right rear bearing. Some side to side play is OK, but up and down .082" isn't. LOL The axle was ok and didn't have to replace that.

Have you checked for any codes? Not sure if the 1990 has a lockup torque converter but it sounds like it is staying in lockup mode. If you put it in nuetral before you stop does it still do that shaking and die?

I had a squeaking noise whenever I made turns and I figured it was the rear bearings so I replaced them and it went away.you have to tear the transaxle down to replace the bearings. It was my first time doing this and I found out that it was easy to take the rear axles out. take the cover off the differential and drain all the fluid.turn your axles until you see the little 3/8 inch bolt. loosen this bolt and pull it out and the pinion shaft will come out and you push the two axles inward and you will see the two c clamps.they come off real easy and then just pull your axles out. the hard part is getting the old bearings out. I tried a slap hammer but the old bearings didn't budge. I fought with it for over an hour.i finaly got angry and I had a little six inch crowbar. I took the hooked end of the crowbar and hooked it behind the bearing and slowly worked my way around the bearing hitting the crowbar with my Minnie sledge and the bearings finaly gave way in a matter of minutes. I cleaned everything up by sanding it with sandpaper and popped my new bearings in. by driving them in with my Minnie sledge and pipe fitting the size of the bearings.then put everything back together.been running for a month since the change and no popping or creaking noises anymore. if your timid you will not be able to do it.you cant be afraid to use a little persuasion

I have a 2000 Dakota. My rearend is making a whining noise. It starts as a low growl when I start moving and the pitch and volume of the whine is proportional the my speed. It whines during acceleration and deceleration at all speeds, even in neutral. Also, at speeds above 20 mph when I let off the accelerator there is a loud clicking coming from the rear end. Suspect this is a different issue and they started at different times. My theory is the whining is caused by the bearings and the clicking is the u-joint. The only thing I have done is change the differential oil, that didn't help. Not sure where to start. Any suggestions????

The 8 1/4 and 9 1/4 rear ends have a problem with the differential clips in the clutch packs snaping and grinding away the differnential housing on the right side.

To prevent this, you should pull the cover, change the fluid and have the diff checked every 30 000km if you're pulling heavy stuff.
Broken Diff clips will cause a clunking or chattering noise when turning corners - So will forgetting to put in the Limited Slip addative!

To fix this you will need special tools. You will need to back off the bearing adjusters , pull the diff carier, Compress the belliveau springs behind the clutch packs and disassemble the carrier. Install new clips, install the carrier, set the backlash and bearing preload (72 ft/lb or so).
