Subject: Help I Took my Dakota to Pep Boys IP: Logged
Message: I took my 93 Dakota 3.9 to Pep Boys yesterday. They replaced the crank sensor because they said it was bad. Charged me $431. Today my truck it turned over but wouldnt start . Called them up and bitched. They had also wanted to replace the plugs, cap, rotor, wires and serpentine belt for good measure. It sounds like it is fuel problem. I think it is the fuel pump. Yesterday it came back with no codes. Since it wont start now will it have codes to read? They paid for the tow and what work will need to be done.

sorry to tell you this man, but if they charged you 431 bucks to change a crank sensor, you got ripped....REAL bad.

Message: They replaced the electronic pick up which was $73.00 the sensor was $116.90 and changed my oil whick was 24.99. The engine diagnostic was 84.99. I guess my question is. "should he have replaced the crank sensor without a error code"
It says on the inspection "no codes present"

Message: josh, if the sensor was bad it should have thrown a code. emphasis on should. no what you may want to check is a factory wire splice just below the power distribution box under hood. i got this from another post that explains it pretty well:
"Right below the underhood fusebox, about 8" down the harness is a splice (#115), from that splice, it powers the PCM, Fuel Pump, and Coil. All four wires are Red/white, one comes from the fusebox, two go right back up to the relays, and the fourth goes the opposite direction to the PCM. You will have to unbolt the fusebox, pull it out of the way, and cut open the tape on the harness to find the splice."

Message: The crank sensor is a pretty simple device. I would say that 99% of the time it is either working or not working. If it's not working you would know it.
Pick up a Haynes manual, a cheap multi-meter and follow the simple directions to test both the voltage to the sensor and the voltage that the sensor returns to the PCM. The instrument, the book and experience would be well worth your time.
Mechanics have become robots and can't think outside the box. That's why most of them rely almost totally on analyzers and scanners to tell them what is wrong.
Another thing, any time someone replaces a part, demand the return of the original. In fact, make it quite clear whenever you take a vehicle in to be serviced that you want everything back except the oil and coolant. You might be surprised at how few parts they replace.

Message: I took it to Pep Boys in Florence, KY. I called the Dodge dealership and got quoted $116 on the crank sensor an additional $105 to install it. Pep boys also replaced the magnetic pickup which was 39.99. The labor on the electronic ignition was $65.00 and the labor on the sensor was 65.70. Well low and behold the tow truck dropped it off there last night. They went to work on it today and it started right up. They said the mechanic drove it around for an hour and had it running for 3 hours and they could not get it to stall or kick off. So they said there is nothing they can do. Now I'm ticked. I know as soon as my wife drives it the 40 miles she has to go to work it will probably die on her in the middle of no where.

Message: Not trying to be a smart as$ here cuzindoug, but I think the most valid part of the post was showing how much Pep Boys charges for their service and the lack of proper diagnosis.
I hope Josh gets it fixed with no more $$$ out of his pocket. I used to live out west where Pep Boys are all over the place and they were not highly thought of for getting your vehicle repaired. I never took mine there based on the experiences of others. Good Luck Josh.

Message: They said they can't find anything wrong with it. I am going to leave it there until I can speak with the General Manager. They said he would be in Friday at 8am. I hope to get my money back and do some of things you guys mentioned. The terrifying thing is how many different possibilities it could be. What happened to the simple fuel, spark or mechanical scenario that used to be so easy to troubleshoot. Maybe I'll just throw in a 318 out of an old duster into it and be set to go. I will keep you all posted. Thanks
