I had an exaust emergecy, I had to put a 3" flowmaster right off the Y pipe. If I just put 3" pipe back to the axle will it make it quieter?
If not what will?

why did you have to put it right after the y-pipe?
it is probably really loud because the muffler is right under the cab... move the muff to under the bed and that will help some... then put a tailpipe one it and that will help even more... then make it exit the truck and that will help most.

Well, me and my friend were going to take off the cat, but the pipes were rusted together, so we cut it off right before the cat. After we cut it off and went looking for a peice of pipe we found out that no one has 3" exaust stuff just laying around. My dad had to have my truck that night, so we just got a 3" flowmaster. Should I just stick with 3" all the way back?

it should be okay... but if you are running no cat it might not be enough backpressure..

sorry... got a little excited!
no, never do that... never go from a bigger size to a smaller size (unless going with two tailpipes). it's better to get bigger on exhaust as you go away from the engine.
with decent mods your truck should be able to support a 3" exhaust, i.e. headers, intake, chip or some sort.

that builds back pressure... get a straw and squeeze one end almost closed... blow thru the other end and see what i mean

exactly...yes it does build back pressure which an engine needs. A 3in to the muffler and 2.5in out of the muff is more than plenty for a v6. A full 3in exhaust is plenty to let engines making up to around 450hp breath fine....I doubt the v6 he has will be making numbers close to that

okay.... i don't know what i am talking about... only worked on cars since i was 15. i have a six that runs 8.95 in a 1/8th and i still don't know what i am talking about... i have..... just read up on it... do some research... there is an extent to the amount of backpressure you want to produce. a cat will give you more than plenty...any thing after the cat or muffler you are going to want big... to help the exhaust escape. if you don't have a cat and only a muffler, the muffler will provide enough backpressure... the smaller pipe in front of the muffler will cause backpressure to build up before the muff and the smaller pipe at the end of the muff will not let the exhaust escape very well.... why the hell would one put a smaller diameter pipe on a muffler?.... kinda defeats the purpose of a bigger muffler.

ps
personally right now i have the stock y-pipe and stock pipe going to a 2.5 muffler... do you think i need to put a smaller tailpipe on it to build more pressure? tomorrow i might go and get a dual exhaust put on because i run nitrous... it will hurt my everyday performance some but help the nitrous out lots...

Have to back Intense on this one.

Why do all good after market exaust systems use the same size tubing out as the stock has to that point then? and they advertise better HP numbers that way.

You have to remember the the factory with there larger pipes leading into smaller pipes get better readings from exaust gasses that way. Because the exaust stays hotter and burns off more harmfull gasses to get the numbers down.

It has been widely proven that if you open up just about any stock exaust system that higher HP is obtained form that.

Thats why "cat backs" are so popular, ever wondered?.

Just got it back. It sounds great! But what they told me didn't. My water pump is leeking pretty bad, it's going to be $225 to replace it. But at least my truck sounds good now.
