Message: double check your routing of the belt. there should be a sticker under the hood. i think it is possible to route it and spin the waterpump backwards.
also, check that you don't have a radiator hose collasping. w/o the stat it should barely get over the lowest normal range line on the gage.

Message: Is the water pump spinning free? Did you check it before you originally put the belts on the first time? Why did you replace the pump? The reason to these questions is: If it didn't spin free the first time, you might have a clearance issue on the impeller(has happened). Other than that you might have a collapsing hose like daddio said(the rubber can "peel" back internally too and cause a blockage) OR strangely enough, some pumps when received from autoparts store have their ends plugged to keep dirt out...if it did have them did you take them out?
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: if for any reason air got into it and made a pocket it will overheat. what i need to do is do a big flush on it and hopefully it works.i replaced it cause the inner bearing went on it, it spinn free, and is not binding on anything.

Message: you know you could have gotten the wrong water pump. the waterpumps with a serpentine belt spin backwards compared to the ones with regular v-belts.
you could also drill a small- 1/16" hole in the tstat to help "burp" the air out of the cooling system.

that's what i'm trying to do. if it overheats without the tstat, it could be the radiator is clogged. either inside or outside. a hose collapsing.
try running it without the cap and the tstat to make sure that water is flowing "into" the radiator through that top hose.
how's the fan clutch? does the e-fan kick on?

Message: Had same problem. It was radiator. Dodge dakota radiators are very thin and clog easily. Have professionally cleaned or buy a new one. I paid just under 200.00 but they go up to about 300.00.

Message: might sound kind of dumb, but if you didnt add more coolant back to the system when you changed the water pump it will overheat like that, because there is no coolant at the tstat t open it. so i would check that too.

Message: Try backflushing the heater core,do a search on here,it explains how in detail,Would be a good idea to do it regardless. My other sugesstion is try replacing the fan clutch if you have one,a lot of people overlook this when they have overheating issues.

Message: stick a thermo into the rad with cap off let idle
and see how hot it is and you can see it flowing
with the cap off
A meat cooking thermo will work about $5
You may have a bad guage sender 1 wire located
down by the thermo housing Alt side the one
on the oposite side A/C 2 wires is the engine
temp to comp you can read this one with a scanner
