Subject: gutted cat IP: Logged
Message: I cut off my cat the other day and gutted it out. It seems to have given me a little bit more performance. I am eager to see what it does for my gas mileage. I put the post O2 sensor right back in the same spot it came out of without even modding it. I have drove about 200 miles and no check engine light yet. The only bad part is that it has a very slight hollow sound a certain RPM's, but it has a deeper grumblier sound overall. So far I am pretty happy with the mod.

You must be kidding me... the stock cats are very restrictive? No way, maybe I should gut my cat and make it less restrictive. Or I could ask for donations to get a new high flow cat. Hey "grow up" do you think you could donate me a high flow cat. Fresh air, how about you, why don't you donate one.

Message: I guess you did not read the part of my post were I said it seems to have given me more performance. I have an appointment to get on the dyno Saturday, so I will post the official results then. I filled up my tank today and my gas mileage also has gone up. I am just letting you know my experience with this mod, I can not speak for anyone else. I can also think of a highly regarded regular that runs no cat.
Get a life...? My life is not making personal attacks on people over a messege board and not even having the balls to use your name or even your online name, fruity.

Message: Wow! All kinds of sh!t slinging going on in here! red- You may have gained a little performance mid and high end by gutting the cat, but you probably lost some in the low end as well. These magnum engines require a little back pressure to run optimally, so get a high flow cat, and not only do you gain back that needed back pressure, but you also get rid of that annoying hollow, tinny sound as well. It also lengthens the life of your exhaust system, engine, AND your neighbors/friends with asthma:)
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: I really doubt it matter much what you do. The actual gains of performance that you actually saw are probably insignificant though.
Basically cuzzindoug gave the only reasons worth listening to here. Basically it will have an adverse effect on the life of your exhaust system, might not give the sound you want.
What would a classic street rod look like with cats on it?
yeah that's what I thought. For the few people that will actually tamper with them, I would not worry about what a couple of guys do.
Besides, who the hell is gonna find out if you have a cat or not? Screw the government.

Message: You know the reason that the cats and all this other emission garbage was created because of the lazy asses that don't take care of their cars i had a 78 lincoln (of course i bought it used around 1988-89)with a 351M with gutted cats and it ran so clean that when i put it on a emission tester after a good through tuneup had cleaner exhaust than the current cars that were new and this thing would burn the tures right off the rims with it like that. So i figure there is nothing to worry about because most of the folks on here maintain their trucks pritty good

Message: Wrong. Anectodal crap and lies. My 2nd car was a 72 Dart, pre-cat. It was optimally tuned, got 24 mpg and put out between 80 and 110 ppm HC emissions at testing. The next car had a cat and tested between 0 and 11 ppm HC its entire life. Catcons cut HC emissions by over 90%. So removing it is like putting 9 other cars' exhaust into the air.
As to "who the hell is gonna find out if you have a cat or not/?", it's simple: if you have emissions testing in your state, you will very likely get caught. And it's a $2,500 fine and a felony conviction. That means you can't vote, own a gun, get a decent job. If that's really worth it to you to make more noise with your toy, you've already sucked down too many fumes.

Message: and heres something else for you guys woried about someone gutting a cat......what about the 18wheeler i saw going down the interstate yesterday maintaing 60mph and chugging black exhaust, or the 90 something escort i saw running rich (i had my a/c on and had to open my windows till i passed him) and those were within 5miles of getting on the interstate. Instead of worring about someone gutting a cat to get more performance how about worring about these people driving a p.o.s. that shound be repaired or junked

Message: Different cars work differently of course. Some older cars you see actually can burn quite cleanly. You don't think that electronic fuel injection has anything to do with how much new cars polute versus old ones now do you?
Bob, I've been around cars for my entire life. I've never known a mechanic that really gives a damn about emissions gear. Frankly it would be more trouble than its worth trying to actually hand someone in for a violation. Most guys take the approach of "well it was there when I looked at it". My Dad generally didn't do that much though, for real. He was pretty careful about what he would let slide and what he wouldn't.
And yes, a mechanic can loose his inspection license for doing that, but then again, how are you gonna find out? I suppose if you felt strongly enough about it you could try to entrap the guys who do it, but that's a really good way to get your ass kicked or worse.
Why don't you drive into the next NHRA drag event and yell about the federal emissions violations there. Or go join that group that wants to ban leaded fuel at NASCAR races. Maybe we can ban all classic cars while we're at it too. Or force emissions inspections on VW Beatles like what they do in California.

Message: "You don't think that electronic fuel injection has anything to do with how much new cars polute versus old ones now do you?" Absolutely, this is a major factor in lower emissions and better gas mileage.
"Instead of worring about someone gutting a cat to get more performance how about worring about these people driving a p.o.s. that shound be repaired or junked"
And that's a situation to be dealt with, too. Modern diesels burn far more cleanly with fewer visible particulates. But it's a lame excuse to point to the other guy who's also polluting and claim that that's justification for you adding to the problem.

Message: I still have the stock muffler on my truck, so I figure that is probably enough back presure for the magnum engine. Should I worry about the fact that my check engine light has not come on even though there is basically no cat? I was also thinking of just putting a strait pipe in place of the cat untill I can save for a whole new exhaust system.
