Subject: Changing shocks...... IP: Logged
Message: How hard would it be for me to change out my shocks? I'm just putting on stock ones - nothing fancy. My truck still has the original shocks on it! Are there any tips that would make this easier for me to do? I'm not exactly an expert mechanic, but I know how to use most tools. I'm assuming that there are no special tools needed for this job. Thanks, Dave

Message: Original owner? Holy Sh1t!!! Those were some long lasting shocks!! It is really easy to change the shocks...on the other hand you are going to have ALOT of rust build up. The bottom bolts(mounted on axle) won't be too hard, but the upper(mounted on frame) are going to be the b1tch. 13/16 end wrench or socket(with breaker bar) if you have one, if I remember correctly. Don't try to turn on the nut on the uppers, it is fabricated with a metal stopper...so it won't turn, so you have to turn it from the bolt side.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: I don't have to jack up the axle or do anything to take the weight off the axle first? Probably a stupid question, but oh well.
My buddy has an air impact wrench. Would that be good to use on them?

Message: No jacking required. You will just have to compress the new shocks in place. The impact wrench would be a great help...but you have to see if you can fit it in there.

Message: the only special tool you may need is a long extension to get around the heat shield. I was unable to get an impact on my 97, hope you can.
Also like cuzindoug said about the rust, get some safety glasses, it sucks going to the ER to get rust out of your eye.
