Subject: Fuel Pump Voltage IP: Logged
Message: My girlfriends son has acquired a 88 dakota which will run of you pour gas in the throttlebody. There is no fuel pressure and no sound from the fuel pump when turning on the key. We've taken the bed off for better access as there's other planned work in the back end of the truck. I measured the voltage coming to the fuel pump. The plug is a 5 pin plug, one pin shows 8.4 volts, the rest have nothing. Is this what should be going to the pump or are we short some power somewhere? This is the 3.9L V6. Also if anyone knows of common problems with this vehicle and things he needs to check/replace please speak up and maybe you'll save the kid some headaches down the road. Thanks in advance.

Message: Electric fuel pump voltage will be battery voltage or 12 VDC or so. Have you check the relay/fuse/wire harness? Also, being an 88 and if the previous owner might have let the truck sit for a while, some kind of rodent might have dined on the wires...it has happened before!

Message: I believe the wiring is ok, of course there could be a problem in an unseen area. I'm not sure about the relay. Not knowing how to test it might mean buying a new one would be the way to go there. The young man who owns the truck has purchased a Haines manual, should be here this week. Hopefully that'll clue me in and some of the specs where I can help him along. Thanks!

Message: try connecting a jumper wire from the positive side of the battery to the 12V in on the fuel pump, and see if it turns on. If it does, then your wiring or a relay is bad. Don't pitch the fuel pump before trying to get it to work.

Message: Found the problem. Pulled the pump out of the tank, black ground wire was off the pump. It's a slip-on friction type connector and it was quite loose and had to be squeezed a bit. Put the pump back in and it started right up.... Thanks for everyones assistance.
