What makes you think it is the speed sensor? What year is your truck? The rear wheel sensor is about $30 and the tranny speed sensor(97) is about $40. Depends on what year it is. The removal and installation takes about 10-15 minutes. Easy.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

its a 99, and i took it to autozone and they pluged that scanner thing up and thats what they said it was. how would i remove and install it and what does that sensor do?

That sensor (assuming wheel sensor) tells the computer how fast your rear wheels are spinning. The data is used to determine whether or not the ABS should be engaged, and more specifically, what the ABS system needs to do to keep the rear wheels from locking up. That's the simple explanation anyway.

Can't help you with an install- I've never done one before in a Dakota. I only vaguely recall one failing on an S10 a long time ago...

is the speed sensor the wheel sensor? i can see it being that but the dude at auto zone said it was the speed sensor but my ABS light does come on when i start my truck and stays on for about 5 sec longer that all the others.

Yes, the RWSS is a speed sensor as well as an intrical part of you ABS system as Craig explained. If it goes bad, then it affects your ABS, and your light will come on. It is located on the differential if I remember correctly. My truck is a 97, so it is a little different than yours.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
