I was wondering about the fesiability of putting either a 5.2 or 5.9L V8 into my 1990 Dodge Dakota 2wd. Currently I have the throttle body fuel injected 3.9L v6. The v6 is getting worn out at 198K miles, low compression on 2 of the cylinders. From what I understand it's not terribly hard to make the motor fit into the truck. What I would like to know is if my 4 speed automatic can handle the power of a V8 with out signifigent changes (i was going to rebuild it if i do a motor swap, 198K is a long time for any tranny) or if I would need to find a v8 automatic, and if i had to find a v8 automatic did they make them with overdrive? Also, I was looking at a ram charger that had a throttle body fuel injected 5.2L in it, and it appears like it's the same wiring setup as my engine. I was wondering if all I would have to do to stick with the throttle body injection would be to change to a v8 throttle body and use a V8 PCM. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i have been thinking about doing the same with my 88, i have the same engine and tranny as you. i'll be watching this post and see if anyone else has any good ideas. i'm sure it can't be hard as the 3.9 is a 318 with 2 cyl, cut off. so probably the pcm might be the biggest thing.

you 2 guys might want to do some searching on this site for info before the flaming starts. there are probably 1,000's of post on this very subject. try searching for v6 to v8 swap.
