Message: Well to basically cop out of your initial question, that would depend on what you use your truck for, and how badly you thirst for more power. If I wasn't towing, or hauling really heavey loads a lot, I would stick to the V6- it'll cost less for a replacement and you will escape some fuel costs in the future. If you're towing a lot, or you really want to explore the possibilities of a hard-core hotrod, the 318 is the more appropriate choice. Not sure if it involves a different tranny though...I'm not very familiar with the pre 4.7 litre V8s.
Now for why I really posted here- to warn you to buy a Mopar remanufactured engine. They're better for warrenty, they will hold up better than 90% of the independent shops' rebuilds. That's the voice of experience comming from here, it's not solid fact. Some rebuild shops do pretty darn nice work, but for the most part I would avoid the independents and stick with the factory.

Message: Besides the actual cost of the new/rebuilt engine and tranny. Does anyone know how much it would cost to have a shop swap engines/trannsmisions? I dont have the equipment nor the expertise to do an engine swap myself so im curious how much id be lookin at forkn over for the labor.
Anyone wanna take a stab at this one?
thanks for your time,
Mac

Message: Performance Unlimited has a "turn the key" modified 318 crate engine (375 HP) for $6,900 or an unmodified 318 crate engine for $4,500. These are for drop and go engines meaning it has all the wires/plugs/coil/manifold/etc. You have to call for just the block.
or
Power Pro Driveline has remanufactured 318's for $1,900.
