Can someone help. I have an 2002 dakota 2wd manual trans. I'm changing the fluid cause I'm getting some sticking between shifting plus I thought at 47k it would be good to do. Dealer says I need manual trans oil and showed me the quart bottle and it just said "manual trans. oil" but didn't have a viscosity. I went to Advance auto to see if they could cross reference something and their quaker state book says that 75/90 gl-3 goes in there but this listing was only up to 1999. What is the diff. between gl-3 and gl-5? If that's the case then it's the same stuff I'm using in my differential that i'm changing out the oil in minus the friction modifier. Can someone confirm this? How many quarts? I'm thinking a minimum of at least 5. I would have bought the stuff at the dealer but it was $10 a quart. If it is 75\90 that goes in there, I can get it at Advance auto for about $3 a quart!! thanks for your help.

basically, ask the dealership what type oil goes in it, they should be able to tell you the weight and the amount. I just changed mine, and basically you fill both the trans and the diff up to the point where they are almost coming out of the fill plug.

I am assuming you have the ax15 manual? if so it takes the 75/90 gl3 (around 2.5-3 qts). the gl5 is corrosive to the brass synchros in our transmission. something to do with more sulfer content or something. i used royal purple's gear oil. it said non corrosive, safe for gl3 and gl4 applications.

This tranny uses a synthetic oil that is more like motor oil than gear oil. Many folks here have reported using Amsoil, Mobile 1, and Royal Purple instead of the Mopar fluid. I have also seen someone recommend this Pennzoil fluid.
