Can anyone tell me what the heck an 'ais motor' is on a 99 3.9L dak? An does it somehow operate in conjunction with the ignition coil?

Air idle speed motor. It's a stepper motor with a pintle (plunger) that blocks off or lets air through a passage in the throttle body or air intake, to adjust the air/fuel mix at idle. If it sticks or malfunctions, it makes the engine run too rich or lean at idle, which can cause idle racing or float up and down, or stalling.

It doesn't interact directly with the ignition coil.

What Bob said...it's more commonly called an IAC (idle air controller). If you need to clean it, it's located on the back of your throttle body. You'll prolly have to remove your throttle body (I recommend a new tb gasket if you remove it...only costs a couple bucks).

To clean:
1.) Remove throttle body
2.) Remove IAC motor (Uses a T-25 screw I think)
3.) Use carb cleaner and gently spray off the pintle on the IAC...I usually spray some cleaner on a paper towel and gently wipe it off as well. Just whatever you do, DON'T push or pull on the pintle or you'll end up having to buy a new IAC.
4.) While the tb is off, you might as well use the carb cleaner and clean the rest of the carbon buildup off of it as well...try to avoid directly spraying the sensors.
5.) Reinstall the IAC onto the tb.
6.) Reinstall the tb using a new gasket.

Done.
