ATF +4 is the replacement for ATF+3. You can use either, DC recommends moving to +4 though.

can't tell you the # of quarts. Haynes manual will tell. You should get one for the fluid capacities and torque settings.

Dealer says 5 qts. However when I called the dealer for the filter, he said there are 2 different filters for this truck. He can't tell which one I need even with the vin #. I called another parts dealer & he said I can tell by counting the # of bolts holes on the pan. Anyone ever hear of this? Otherwise I may have to pull the old filter, & bring it to the dealer to match 'em up.

Autozone only shows 1 filter, Champ brand TF164. Hard to believe they can't tell which one to use. You must have the 42RE transmission.

About 5-6 qts to change filter, 10 qts if tranny were completely dry and rebuilt.

I changed mine a month or so ago
USE MOPAR FILTER - VERY IMPORTANAT
If you drain it completly with pan down, it will take about 9 -11 quarts and ATF+3 is recomended fluid.
filter - you will find out only after you take it out.Its about 30 - 35 $ at dealership.
also put the rubber gasket from dealership and torq it right, think it about 45 - 50 inch pound ( read chiltons manual)
also consider to put a drain valve to avoid a messy Pan down operation in future

I got a rubber gasket with the filter from adavance. Autozone kit is cork with filter.

ATF+4 is the recommended fluid, it's the replacement for ATF +3. I think you can only get +4 at dealership, +3 is available at parts stores.

I beleive the differnece between +3 and +4 is the oil base that is used. It's not fully synthetic but next best thing.

dealer told me 20 pints ..10 quarts.. I think this is the total including torque converter. I did not put in that much in my 95.

I can't believe how many stupid people put up posts. The filter kits available from WIX come with two different gaskets and filter ($10). The recommended fluid is ATF+4 (this replaces ATF+3 which is now obsolete), note also that the ATF+4 fluid becomes brown and odorous as it ages, but retains all original properties well beyond recommended change intervals. Synthetics like AMSOIL are the best option though. Also if your clutch packs are slipping at all put a quart of Lucas Trans Slip Fix to add a little hydraulic pressure and ensure positive engagement. Make band adjustments at this time, as well as inspecting kickdown cable etc. for specified tolerances. If any of this confuses you, sign up for an online service manual.

You can't be too smart yourself advising people to put that lucas crap in their tranny.

What trouble have you had with Lucas? I have run Lucas Trans Slip in all of my vehicles with over 100,000 miles. Had nothing but great luck!!! Lucas oils are great!!!

My Dakota is close to 180,000 original miles on the engine and tranny. No oil burning or transmission problems at all. Just good old routine maintenence and a bottle of Lucas TSF.

Oh about being smart... having a hoist probably makes me one of the smartest people on this post. Think of me next time your slurping fluid on the ground, outside! Ah, the perks of having your own business.

YOU WORK HARD, I WORK HARDER!!
