Subject: 95 dak sport 3.9 v6 IP: Logged
Message: my wife was driving the dak on the way to church when the rpm dropped and the truck quit. it wouldnt start back so she got some help to get it off the road. her dad pulled the air cleaner assembly and as long as he poured fuel directly into the intake it would run, as soon as he quit pouring it quit running. later that day, it started up and i drove it home but then the next day it wouldnt start again. i figure this to be a fuel pump, any other ideas and suggestions on how to check to see if it is the fuel pump?

Message: with the key on (engine not running)
pull the cap off the fuel rail
press down with something (key or small screw driver) see if your getting fuel
(if/when it quits again)
otherwise get a fuel pressure gauge and pressure test it,\
how many miles on the truck?

Message: thanks for the reply Joe. I have 140k on it. i love this truck. it had 2 miles on it when i bought it in '95. no major problems just average maintenance stuff. should i pull the cap, and release all the fuel pressure that it is under first, then turn the key to see if the pressure builds back up? i know when i had to do some work before, it had pressure even with the key out of the ignition.
thanks

Message: jay if you got 140 thou on it and never changed
the fuel pump its a safe bet its time
wait and see what other responses you get
and i'm sure they are gonna say the same
heck you lucked out mine (94 sport)
crapped out at 110 thou.
if you do it yourself 2 ways of getting to it
dropping the tank or unbolting the bed and sliding it back a bit. myself i moved the bed back
and was glad i did cause i had to move the pump (turn it) 3 times for the gauge to work right
also i bought my pump at autozone and sorry i did
little cheap sock style fuel filter and also
5 thou later the pump is humming!
NAPA cost a lil. more but it's a better pump and filter
the StealerShip i'd forget about
they quoted me a price of allmost $400.
need more help just ask,

Message: thanks again Joe,
i read in the haynes manual and it says drop the tank but i was wondering about going the other route. how many bolts hold the bed down and will I still have to drain the tank? I had just filled it up prior to this. thanks for the recommendation on the pump, ill check out napa. i was looking at advance.

Message: mine had 8
unplug the tail light's and unplug the tail gate brake light
and no draining the tank if you go this route
