Subject: HELP ME!!!!! IP: Logged
Message: Ok heres my problem. I have a 2001 Quad Cab 3.9L V6 automatic and I am getting some engine rev and shift sputtering. The thing is its only doing it when I refuel. Yesterday I was down below an 1/8 and my light come on and today it was driving fine, like new. I went and got gas and now its doing the same thing again. It seems like its trying to shift and its reving up and Im losing power like its clogged somewhere. I tried changing the plugs, oil, air filter, fuel injector cleaner, fuel line antifreeze nothing is working. Anyone got any ideas? Someone said it might be my fuel pump but I only have 64,000 miles+. Also my tire treads are low and I need an alignment but I dont think that would cause this.

Message: Sounds like water in your [ new gas ] ,
as you describe , it does it after fill-up ?
Get some gas-line anti-freeze , methyl hydrate.
If fuel pump was acting up it would be at
1/8 tank , or anything below say 1/4 tank.

1st fuel line anti freeze is minimal at removing water (water remover is best)
"Heat" makes a good one
2nd seems you over looked 1 filter "Fuel filter"

Message: Yes, it does sound like fuel filter...the only problem is it is an assembly along with the pressure regulator and pump. Have you tried a pressure check? You can get a fuel pressure gauge from all auto parts stores for about $30. Just attach it to the schader valve on your fuel rail and turn the key on. Should run about 35-45 psi and not drop off after the fuel pump cycles off.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Fuel filter is part of the fuel pump module...you have to buy the entire thing. Runs about $200-250 depending where you buy it. It is in the fuel tank.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: ok, I do have a 1494 code for the engine which is the Leak Detection Pump. Do you think this could be causing the problem. Dodge told me this awhile back and nothing happened but just recently I got these problems.

Message: Can't help you with the code, just going to scold you for letting your truck run so low on gas- not a good idea. Fuel pump will overheat. It is possible you damaged your pump after 60k of running it low, esp if you habitually run it that low.
It could be a clogged sock on your fuel pump, I will assume cuzindoug is right when he says it's integrated on your truck- I've never had one apart. You used to be able to get socks for them though. I thought that there is a fuel filter outside of that, but I cannot find the shop manual for my '04 so I can't help you there.
Can't help you much with the code- I'll ask my dad to look it up tomorrow but I suspect that you will have an asnwer by then anyway. Leak detection could have something to do with the evaporative controls on your truck, but I have very little experience with those kinds of problems.

Also does anyone know if my fuel pump is going how long I should drive on it?

Message: No, I havent fixed it yet and I am still having the same problem. Except I try to keep my tank full or at least not go below 1/4 so I keep the pump from overheating. I just cant afford to fix it yet.
