Subject: Poor Gas mileage IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 quad cab v6 and when I bought it it was avgeraging about 22 mpg. Over the past year it has dropped drastically and now I average only 12 mpg. I have changed the plugs and wires and installed a k&n filter and my mileage still sucks. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with my truck ?

Message: make sure noone is siphoning the gas out. with prices the way they are right now and getting worse, there is a lot of fuel theft occurring. Most station are now prepay at all pumps at all times because of drive offs. Try buying a lockable gas cap.

Message: I was going to do the o2's but the front one is like $180, and I scanned the comp and no codes are showing up. $180 is a lot of money to just spend without a justification of a faulty sensor. How do I set the injector sync, and why would it have gotten out of whack in th epast year ?

Message: Autozone has bosch o2's that are a perfect fit for $50 or so. where did $180 come from?

Message: I had a bad 02 sensor that didn't trip a code. a drop of 10 mpg is mostlikely that sensor. Also food for thought...that 10 mpg costs you about..220 miles per tank or approximately $52 per tank at $2.85/gal
4 tanks of gas and you more then paid for the sensor.

Message: From your description, O2 sensor is probalby getting lazy. It won't set off any fault codes (right away), but it will hurt your fuel mileage. I don't know if I'd trust an aftermarket O2 sensor- I would stick with Mopar. This is just the voice of experience of getting kicked in the butt a few too many times by getting wrong sensors/incorrect calibration codes from aftermarket distributors. If you want spark plugs, NAPA, Autozone, PepBoys etc. is fine, not the really delicate stuff. That is just an opinion based on experience helping Dad who is a mechanic, not a fact.

Message: $180 was what I was quoted from autozone for the upstream sensor and around $80 for the downstream one. Can you get me a part number on this mythical $50 sensor ?

Message: I know the savings will pay for the sensor if that is what is truly wrong, but I hate to spend $180 and have no chance in mileage, there are a few posts on here where people have changed the sensor and have not seen a difference, also to me if the truck is running so rich to lose 10mpg, I would think the sensor would throw a code if it was that much out of calibration.

Message: 2001 -I should have realized that you have two upstream sensors. At Autozone the bosch universal o2s are $54.99 part #15729 each if you want the o/e type they are $93.99 p#15705 each, the o/e type for my 98 is now up to $61.99 fortunatly it only uses one sensor. I agree that this gets a bit pricey to throw parts at a problem.

Message: Ughhh! Just finished off another tank and only got 10.1 mpg. WTF ????? I know people with v8s in the full size dodge that are averaging 16-17 mpg.
I am seriously thinking of trading this truck in for a quad with a v8 as it is killing me with the poor gas mileage and if I got a v8 quad my payment would only be $60 more a month but I would save about $130 month in fuel cost.
I am running autolite platinums with only 15k miles on them, should I try champions ? The cap and rotor only have 15k on them as well.
Somebody please help this frustrated v6 owner out.

Message: some thing has to be really wrong for you to get such lousy mileage. I really suspect that you have mutiple problems that are hard to figure out over the internet.
Have you had the vehicle scanned for codes?.
If you can't do your own troupble shooting it would pay in gas savings to have a good mechanic check out your vehicle.

Message: How many miles are on the truck? What kind of oil do you / have you used?
One cheap thing you can do, do an oil change and use 1 quart of transmission fluid or marvel mystery oil. Run for 500 miles, change with all oil, run for 500 miles and change again with all oil. Of course change sooner if you notice oil pressure fluctuation. If this works, take it to a shop for engine flush service. I am getting 18 (maybe more since I just adjusted my tranny low/reverse band) and last nov I was getting at best 15 (usually 12-13). I did this, and immediately saw an increase in mpg. I did do oil changes regularly but it still broke down and cruded up inside.

Message: Hey everyone, I am happy to report I am making progress. I decided to change the sparkplugs back to champion from the bosch's I put in back in January and I also installed another cap and rotor and my mileage avg has improved to 16.1.
The truck has 60,000 miles on it. Do you think I would get any mileage improvement by changing the wires also ? Has anyone seen a difference by changing their wires ? The truck is not missing, but after changing the plugs and cap/rotor I noticed the exhaust smells much cleaner than before. As far as codes, I scnaned it about a month ago and all it said was the gas gap was bad. I use 10-30 mobil 1 synthetic. I am still down 4 mpg from what it was getting back in Dec and am desperate to find them again.

Message: Ever think that with the way things are nowadays as opposed to a year ago that it may in fact have something to do with the gas itself? Also, how fast do you drive? In traffic more now than then? Check your tire pressures lately or air filter?
I have a 2002 with over 40,000 miles & get 20+ mpg..My father has a '94 with almost 275,000 miles & gets 20 mpg.
Have your throttle body serviced, I have a friend who owns a shop & get my throttle body cleaned once or twice a year,if its really dirty, afterwards you CAN tell a difference.
