I've posted earlier about a grinding sensation in my truck. I have an 02 2wd sport with 47k on it and manual tranny. this sensation is definately coming from the rearend somewhere. I was in an empty parking lot and in first gear and only accelerating under idle and turned the wheel almost all the way to one side and there it was, the grinding! It's almost as if the tire was rubbing inside the wheel well, that's how it feels and the sound is coming from the rear but when i put the clutch in it wont do it, it only does it in gear and around 5mph. I thought originally it may have been bearings up front. It's doing it more and more now when i'm pulling in and out of parking spaces and it's kind of embarrassing! Why would it only do it when turning the wheel sharply left or right? Sometimes it will do it when just pulling out straight. Do you think it's my gears or something else? Would the drums or brake hardware or emergency cable cause any of this? If I can't determine this with the help from this post then I'll have to take it in to the dealer and I DON'T want to do that cause they'll tell you anything to make money. FYI- it's not metal on metal grinding. Would any reputable non dealer places be able to figure this out? thanks for your help

Does your truck have limited slip differential
( posi-trac ) ?
Other possibility is the " spider gears " worn !
Possible to clear with ' oil/grease ' change
in the differential , if not = need repair..

not sure about the posi trac, i'll have to check the sticker in my glove box. I know it's stock with 3.55 gears. Yes, I want to do an oil change in the differential. Is there any other way to determine if it's a problem with the gears. When i do my oil change in the diff. what should I be looking for on the gears? Play, broken, shavings, etc. What are the spider gears. I'm not real educated when it comes to gears. the two gears on each of the axles, what are they called? And the gear that connects to the driveshaft? And if i'm not mistaked is there another type assembly right between the two axle gears (maybe the posi). Educate me on this and different things to help me narrow this down. I sure do appreciate it, thankyou so much.

before I opened up the rear end I would pull the rear tires and then the brake drums and see if some thing is wrong there. then if that is ok I would take the cover off of the diff.

I have the same problem you are describing but mine is a 99 with 3.92 limited slip. I changed the oil (and added additive) in the diff shortly after i bought it and it started making the noise. Mine will only do it in 2wd in 4 i can hear the inside wheel slip on the ground.

I'm very frustrated with this. Just when i think i've got it narrowed down something else makes me think differently. I've still got the grinding sensation. I can only seem to duplicate it when disengaging the clutch and pulling out from first. I'm thinking the torque along with the turning radius triggers whatever it is. It won't do it just coasting or any other gear but first and usually only pulling out. If it was the differential you would hear it all the time wouldn't you? By the way, I have anti-slip differential according to my sticker. SOOOOOO- I want to change my diff oil, it needs done anyways (48K). Should I replace any seals inside when i take the cover off or just let them be, they don't leak or anything. How many quarts and what oil? Also, I want to change the oil in my manual tranny. Again, how many quarts and what oil. Then I will check rear brakes, emergeny cable, also u-joint and if they don't cost a whole lot I'll just replace the tranny mounts anyways. One last thing. Anyone put new control arm bushings on? Are they expensive? I've eliminated front bearings cause I believe they would do it all the time regardless of what gear I was in. There is no play in the wheels. I'm wondering about my right front ball joint though. they were replaced already about a year ago and my right front wheel appears to angle slightly more than the left (top of tire is closer to the engine than the bottom tire) castor or camber, don't know which one it is.
