Subject: Rear end noise?....... IP: Logged
Message: For the past year my '89 3.9 4WD has been making a noise in the rear that sounds like bad tires, but I don't think that is the problem. The sound is a whining sound that gets higher and lower pitched as I speed up and slow down. The transmission has been fine, so I don't think that is the problem.
It almost makes the same sound as when it is in 4wd, but it is not in 4WD.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave

Message: I just had mine checked out because of the same thing. It was the carrier bearing. Had it replaced and now it doesn't make a sound.

Message: Have you tried changing the gear oil in your rear? If it is a limited-slip diff, make sure that you get the right oil w/ friction modifires. it worked for me, but it seems to need changing every 18 months.

Message: I have never changed the rear-end oil. Just had it topped off at oil change time. Maybe I will try that.Thanks.
