 Subject: HELP 4 wheel drive lever not staying

OK i have a lil bit of a prob with my truck. This isnt the first time it has happend. My 4 wheel drive lever wont stay in place when i go to put it into 4 wheel drive. Is there a pin? or some locking part that broke?
Its odd because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. This is the second time it has happend and i thought i fixed it last time by tightening the top nob. But its not loose now?? so i dont know what the problem may be.
Hope someone can help me.
BTW its a 87 dakota

What happens is they become dry and sticky and
will not move freely enough to stay and will
pop out
remove boot in cab and squirt lots of oil on it
and under truck on linkage
real oil not WD 40
