Message: I have a 1985 Dodge D100, and im thinking about selling it and getting a 1998-2002 Dodge Dakota for better gas mileage. I've been looking around web sites, and seen about 18 mpg in city and 22 mpg Highway with a 3.9L 5 speed manual 2wd. Does a regular cab get better gas mileage than a extended or 4 door dakota? And also, what kind of cheap mods can you do to gain more mpg? I could get a car, and get way more mpg, but i don't think I would be happy with a car. Right now, I drive about 10 miles to school. About 3 of those miles is in a town, with 3 red lights, the other 7 miles is highway, with a few hills.

Message: Best gas mileage for a dak would be a 3.9 would be: 5 spd manual tranny, reg cab, 2WD with 2.94 gearing. That is what mine is, and from what I read, and what my buddy tells me (he has 92,93,94 4X4 daks) my truck would be about best truck gas mileage wise. I get 19-21 City and 24-26 Hwy. Just look at my profile for my mods. They have greatly improved my MPG as long as I keep my foot out of it:)
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: That would depend on whether you have RC,CC,or QC or if it is 2X4 or 4X4. My Reg Cab 2X4 has plenty of power(I have hauled a yard of top soil which is approx 2000# with no problems...the springs hated me though) because it is not hauling around the extra weight that a CC or QC or 4X4 have. Plus with your basic bolt-on mods(TB, etc) you can add more mid and high end power.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Personally I would never buy another v-6 in a truck. I only get about 17-18 hwy with my truck but it has the complete opposite of "southern's" truck. 93 4x4 club cab Automatic. About the worst combo for a v-6. Truck feels like it has pretty good power around town but on the highway if I so much as hit a breeze or a hill its downshift time. If you want a dakota for mileage get a 2wheel drive stick. if you want one to actually work get 4x4 stick with 5.2 or 4.7...the extra power helps alot and gets the same mileage as my truck...actually my grandfathers 5.2 gets on average 1 mpg better then I do.
