Subject: I'm looking at v6 5speed with 90k on it

Looking at v6 5speed with 90k on it. I currently own a Chevy S-10 Blazer, and am pretty damn sick of the things. There too low, too low quality for me. That and loading the dirt bikes into the trailer and trying to tow with that thing is a frigen joke. it sags the rear end down pretty low, so I want a truck, but the s-10 pickup doesn't fit the bikes very well(tested on a buddies), so I am intrested in a dakota.

I went and checked out a v6 with a 5 speed today, I only could look at it(was for sale at a local "for sale" strip of land), I liked the looks, interior seemed nice, and the under body was pretty clean. My question is this:

As far as a truck goes I have 4 very basic requirments:

Comfortable going 75 mph on the freeway.
Rear end looses traction in the rain(hey, its phoenix, when it rains.. we like to screw around)
Won't fall to crap at 120k :)
able to pull 400-600lbs in the bed.

So, will the dakota meet all those? I don't want a v8, quiet simply there just more expensive. My budget is roughly 5,000$ for buying the vehicle. I wish it was more, but I'm in college, and paying it myself. My father agree'd to loan me the 5k(or so), and so I can't really change it. Enough back story.

I've owned 2 vehicles myself. 85 S-10 pickup, 85 S-10 Blazer. I prefered the pick-up because it could cruise the freeway at around 65. That made me happy. I'm easy to please.

Yes? No? better ideas?

Thanks!

If it's a Magnum-era V6 (1992-up) you should be okay.

Great :) My father owns a 99 4 banger dakota, and he just loves the thing. Just rolled past the 100k mark a few months back, and nothings ever gone wrong, except his alternator ate it recently. Also, from what i've read.. so long as the dakota isn't a lemon, there pretty damn sturdy. I do remeber reading something about water leaking though.

Is there a fix to it yet?

i've got a 98 reg cab 3.9 w/ the 5speed. yes it's comfortable at 75mph, yes it will loose traction in the rain if you get on it. I have just under 98k on it and all i've put into mine so far is regular oil changes, tune up (napa brass cap, napa rotor, wires, plugs), a serpentine belt and ball joints. Also had the catalytic convertor changed but that was under warranty. In the future just for preventative maitenace, water pump, double roller timing chain, 180 degree t-stat. No major mechanical problems yet. Just the other day went and got 800# of dirt, put it in the box, no problems at all. Had more wieght than that when i hauled logs in the box, was pretty close to the limit (front end was a little squirrly over rail road tracks)

I had a 94 s-10 pickup and got rid of it for my 3.9L dakota and have had no regrets. My dakota can easily pull a 4500 lbs boat trailer with only small problems, like braking... (considering the truck weights almost 1000 pounds lighter) The only thing you might wanna check out is the bed room cause I don't think there's a large difference in size from the S-10. But hey, I could be wrong...

Take it from me the dakota feels right at home with dirtbikes in the back. It hauls my 94 yz125 no prob also does well with my 99 fzr600r in the bed. Have had 1960lbs of rock in the bed. pulled fully loaded u-haul trailer at 70 in o/d. Drives thru 1.5 ft of snow without spinning a tire (can stop and start) Oh yeah ...It gets really squirrely when it rains :) (I have posi too) Don't fear buying the dakota just keep it in good shape and it will give you many miles trouble free. turned over 142k on mine yesterday.

I have put a yard of topsoil at least 20 times it sits pretty low but no problems I was told it was around 1 ton so I see 600# to be nothing

I have a 98 V6, 5 speed with 170K and it still runs great. It is overdue for a timing chain and the intake pan is having the typical leaking problems. Despite this, I get 20 MPG combined city/freeway driving here in Phoenix if I take it easy and keep it under 2500 RPM's. It will spin the tires in the rain if you get on it, but nothing too exciting. I picked this one up to tow my 2500lb boat and it does an adequate, not great, but adequate job. I can't really complain.

I keep a 100lb section of railroad track strapped near the tailgate to help smooth out the bumps. Just watch out for paint problems. If you see any type of peelingor extreme fading, be warned that the paint will start to come off in sheets!

I've got a 98 Dakota...3.9L auto, regular cab, 2wd.

75mph is the very minimum speed I drive on the interstate...quite comfortable at 115mph too, but it's a little freaky if you hit a dip in the road. lol

Traction will depend on the tires...my Bridgestone Duelers don't lose it with normal driving. Powerbraking is difficult with them unless I'm on new asphault...even in the rain or on gravel. From a dead stop, I can get them spinning really good if I mash it though. Snow is still a biatch since it's a 2wd with open differential. My stock tires were a whole new ballgame...I managed to spin it out on a highway ramp doing 50mph (backward) without even having my foot on the gas...lol. Powerbraking was easy then as well...I could get a nice smoke cloud rolling, especially on new asphault.

Definitely won't fall to crap at 120k... you'll have some basic maintenance I'm sure, but just look at some of the threads...most Daks when maintained properly (even when modified and raced) will run over 200k miles.

400-600lbs won't be much trouble...especially with a 5spd. I've got a Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4 and I haul it with no trouble...it weighs around 450 lbs (500 with everything probably). If it's a 2wd, your suspension will sag a bit (I have stiffer shocks)...but nothing compared to a 2wd S-10...at least not my friend's old S-10...which was newer than my Dak even. I've also hauled 1,950lbs of bricks in my bed and it handled it...although accelerating was extremely slow, bumps were not pretty, and stopping was nearly impossible...but it did it. I don't recommend that though.

Oh yeah...water problem...I believe there's a way to fix it just by rerouting one of the hoses up above the passenger floorboard. Only costs a couple bucks for an elbow. I have the same issue except I have rubber floormats which keeps it from soaking the carpet...and the only time I have the issue is when my a/c compressor is running. Considering I sorta never use my a/c and it no longer blows cold air (which really freaking sucks on rainy days!)...i rarely have that problem.
