Subject: 1991 Dakota 3.9L Low Voltage IP: Logged
Message: I know I've seen some postings relating to this topic, but I wanted to share my exact experience. My '91 3.9L has 175,000 miles on it in Phoenix, Az and lately the check engine light is on and the voltage meter is reading about 10-11 volts. The check engine light stays on constant and the voltage reading goes down slightly day after day. It started doing this only intermittently about 3 months ago; the light would come on and the voltmeter would read low, then next start or next day the light would be off and voltmeter would read fine, about 14. Finally the battery died and I put a new battery in. Now, about 2 months later the problem is back 100 % of the time. Had the battery checked, was good, just needed a charge. Took the alternator to Autozone ( off the truck ). They checked and said it passed, even though it's the original alternator. I've seen lots of posts related to the voltage regulator in the ECU going bad. But, considering how the problem started as intermittent, is the ECU the likely cause or would wiring be the likely cause? Thanks for your help!

Message: Slight correction, it's a Bosch alternator which means I must have replaced the original at some point ( I bought the truck new ); but, still tested OK.

Message: I always thought the voltage regulator was in the alternator, but maybe I'm wrong. If you wanna see if your alternator is bad without having it tested, start the truck and disconnect the negative battery cable. If the truck dies, then the alternator is not producing enough power to keep the engine running, let alone charge the battery.

Message: Have you checked the wiring under the
underhood fusebox = splice about 8 to 10 inches down the wiring harness.
Redo this splice - usually corroded ( green ).
Another possibility is the connector to the
computer [ ECU ] - passenger side fenderwall.
Be sure to disconnect battery negative while doing any of this..
