Message: Does anyone else have a really bad knock on their 96' 3.9L ? I've been trying to track down the problem on mine to get my engine running smooth and this would be my first step. Any ideas guys?

Message: oil pressure is fine and has been ever since I've had the truck. Then again, it's been knocking for a long time also... It's not really loud, but is noticeable from the cab.

Message: Sounds like the timing chain. It sounds a lot like a knock on mine too, but the timing chain sounds like a knock when it's really loose, and tends to go away when you rev the engine. Plus it affects timing and smoothness too.

Message: my 93 5.2 does the same thing, but it doesnt lose any power what so ever. it goes away with rpms as well. ive determined its a lifter. what kind of oil do you run? anything thinner than 10w30 is not recommended at all.

Message: tek, If you're due for an oil change then I would suggest pouring some seafoam in the crankcase and let your engine idle for 5-10 minutes before dumping it. It might help loosen anything that is sticking. Or better yet, find a shop that has the bilstein engine flush machine. This way they dump your oil and hook up the machine to your oil filter and flow warm solvent through and vacuum it out of your drain plug. It basically back flushes your engine. It's about 70-80 bucks and some Pep-boys shops have this service.

Message: mine started knocking after i put 5w30 full syn in there. horrible idea. the lifters get f'ed up from the oil. its way too thin.you need to change it right now. not tomorrow. right now. pissing in your engine would work better than 5w30.

Message:
Does it go away or fade if you slip it into Park or Neutral? How about clutch engaged or disengaged with a manual trans. Mine, ’99 with 70K, duplicates a subtle knock you hear almost amplified by the cab only when warm only in drive at idle.
Being curious I traced the death out of it and with a mech. scope found the hot spot on the front side of the oil pan. Asked a few more qualified wrenches including two dealer techs what they thought.
Result - not a major concern unless it gets louder. The engine has somewhat “lose” tolerances and 3 agreed they’ve heard similar low idle knock before.
You need the scope and it is not detected outside or underneath the truck at idle.

Message: according to the manual, the knocking I hear can be normal when running 87 octane gas. I tried a different gas station and the knocking seems to have gotten quieter. I'ma take my time and really look into it, I'll let you guys know what I come up with.

Message: it may be a lifter if:
1. goes away with rpm
2. you lose no oil pressure
3. it gets a little or much more quieter after warmup
4. it appears to come from the top end.

Message: i certainly hope you changed out that sh!tty 5w30 oil. that was the worst thing i ever did to my dodge. i noticed alot of things happen to it. the lifters started knocking. it had a decent lack of power do to high amount of friction in the engine with thin oil. and it over heated easily on steep hills.

Message: if you want to know if it is a serious oil pressure or bearing related problem then change the oil and cut open the oil filter. The filter will have metal flakes from the bearing if its a rod or crank knock. just make sure you cut it in a way that you won't add metal to the filter when cutting...i e knife or something sharp, no grinding.

Message: jayb, I don't know if it was so much the oil that did your engine in, but the detergent factor of it will loosen deposits very quickly, so if your lifters were already on their last leg, then odds are the synthetic did them in (Remember, synthetic only amplifies internal engine problems)
