Message: Number of things to check.
#1 Check your distributor for play...bushings wear out and cause your backfire prob.
#2 Timing chain should be changed if it hasnt been done, they stretch and screw up timing. (mine was over an inch stretched at 105k(you have same motor, yours is too))
#3 if first two are ok then do the injector sync mod, you can find it with the search.
Start with those and we can go from there, good luck 93's run pretty good usually.

Message: Just how many miles before you replace the timing chain? I have a 99 3.9L v6 that has same symptoms but I only have about 48,500 miles on it!?

Message: Despite all the changes the "book" still states 50,000 miles. With the tesioner that was added later from the factory, many go more than twice this number of miles without issue, but even with the tensioner, the FSM still states 50K for the change. Basically, if the chain has stretched anywhere near 1/2" deflection, it's junk, and this is even more critical in MPI models. Replace with a high quality roller unit for longer life and reduced friction. If replacing with an OEM-style chain, get an OEM-style tensioner. It's a direct bolt-in retrofit, but if using a hi-quality roller unit, skip the tensioner. The chain would just eat it up.
