Has anyone with a Gen1 Dakota put on an electric water pump drive? I was thinking about doing that. I figure maybe that and an electric cooling fan would free up some horsepower.

i'd put some serious thought into reliab.
i know guys are running them on the streets and some makers claim they are street worthy
but elec. water pumps were a race design and idea

atleast when a regular pumps starts to fail
you'll know it most of the time, noise, leak, and chances are when it does you wont get stuck on the side of the road, when that electric unit fails guess what,
it's just going to flat out quit

Yeah same here i dont trust the electric driven coolant pump.

Now if u have AC they have an electric driven AC unit u can buy if u want your power and still have your AC but since it wouldnt be a direct fit...

Thanks for the replies. One more question, I would like to get rid of the solid, clutchless fan and put a pusher style electric fan on the bumper-side of the radiator, in preparation for a future V8 swap. Just any thoughts on the installation and possible HP increase from not having the crank-driven fan

Id try to go for an electric fan that pulls the air through the radiator if u can fit it since its a more efficient way of cooling.

As for the direct drive fan depending on the type will free up 5-15 hp. My friend switched from a solid type to a thermo clutch and said he seen very noticeable gains.

Don't worry about making space with whatever you choose to run, remember that these trucks also come factory with a v-8 and a clutch fan on those, you have plenty of room under that fan shroud for whatever you want to do.

93Dak, remember we're talking about a Gen1 Dak, not a Gen2 like yours. I know that when the Shelby Dakotas came out (the only Gen1 Daks with V8s) Shelby had to use a pusher type electric fan in font of the radiator, and could not use an engine driven fan.

If he is doing an engine swap depending on what he puts in (premag or mag) should determine the space. Remeber that the engine compartment changed absolutely none when they put the mag 5.2 in 92. The motor mounts moved. The space is there. But you do make a valid point if it is a pre-mag 5.2...though I don't see why anybody would do that? Why not go for more power?

I was going to go for a 76' built 318 that I have sitting in a crashed Diplomat. A friend and I got 400 hp out of it by doing Hot Rod's buildup of the engine.
