Subject: Why did 2002 fuel economy go up 2 mpg? IP: Logged
Message: Anyone know what was changed in the 2002 model year that caused the V6 city mpg to increase from 16 to 18 mpg? Below is the official MPG listing for 2002 and 2001.
Dakota 3.9 with auto
2002 -
MPG (city) 18 MPG (comb)18 MPG (hwy) 19
2001 -
MPG (city) 16 MPG (comb) 17 MPG (hwy) 20

Message: Could be a bunch of things. Maybe some more tweaking of fuel mixtures and timing, slight differences in exhausts, or maybe different gear ratios in the tranny?

Message: The only difference I could find was the Axle Ratio - changed from 3.55 to 3.21. I wouldn't have expected this difference would add 2 mpg to city and decrease hwy by 1 mpg. Must be something else.

Message: Yeah, that'd do it actually... Engine RPMS are actually lower at speed, which usually equals less throttle at speed.
Of course, highway speed usually involves having to get on it, and the higher ratio makes the engine work harder. My guess would be that an identical 2002 to my 2000 3.9L 5-speed 3.55 would be slower in the 1/4 and 0-60.
