Subject: Replaced Belly Pan and Intake Gasket IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97, 3.9L CC w/ 90K miles. Well I finally made some time and replaced the intake gasket. I thought I would go ahead and tell you my expereience for future references. I was able to look down the throttle body and see some wet oil, eventhough it wasn't much I wanted to make sure that it didn't cause any future problems. I bought the kit from Hughes with the thick aluminum belly pan just to make sure it doesn't happen again. I ordered it late on Friday and it arrived the next week on Thursday. It took me most of the day on Saturday to do everything. I've never done a job like this so I was expecting it to take longer than the 4-6 hours. I took my time on everything making sure I didn't screw anything up, and what took the most time was cleaning off the old gasket and making sure it didn't get into the engine. The only thing I would have done differently would be to buy the end intake gaskets from dodge so they would have been rubber (like the ones that came off) instead of the cork that I used. I used permatex around the water jackets underneath the intake gasket, and under and ontop of the cork end intake gaskets, and no leaks yet. It did sit overnight though before I ended up starting it up. I cleaned out the throttle body, cleaned the sensors, pressure washed the intake and also cleaned up some of the casting around the fuel injectors and intake ports. The fuel injectors were a pain to get out and put back in even with putting oil around the o-rings. I ended up getting new o-rings for the top and bottoms of the fuel injectors.
Before this, I was getting a pinging, so i was using premium gas all the time. I am now using the low octane gas with no pinging yet, about 100 miles. I am still getting a rattling/knocking noise, which I think is the loose timing chain. I was hoping that replacing the intake and belly pan gasket would cure my timing that is off by about 5 degrees, but no results yet. I also still get a slightly rough idle on humid mornings that lasts for the first minute. It feels smoother when accelerating but nothing drastic. I will probably be replacing the timing chain with a double roller and tensioner in the next couple of months so I'll let you know if that ends up solving my rattling noise, timing issue and occasional rough idle.

Message: Yes, the rattling/clanking sound is you timing chain, and you won't "cure" your timing issue until you replace it. 93dak4x4 change his timing chain @ 105K miles and it had over an inch of slack, so that could be your 5 degrees. Did you use fel-pro gaskets for your intake? The Mopar ones aren't the best.

Message: That's what I was afraid of. I used the gasket that came with the belly pan because the rubber looked a little stronger than the fel-pro one, and I used Felpro for the intake. I just don't like using cork gaskets that much because I'm used to working on Hondas.
